Re: Do you use VPN, which one, and why

I use openvpn for my clients to access their remote servers shares. But I think that is a bit of a different application than what the OP is thinking about. Personally, I use PIA on my system all the time. My isp doesnt need to know what Im doing while surfing the web. However, VPN's are a point to ...

Re: Cannot write to external new HD

After changing ownership check that the permissions and ownership are indeed correct cd /media/myname ls -l (the -l is lowercase L) post your output. Either your ownership is not right or permissions need to be set also. When you partition / format a drive with gparted you will notice that you have ...

Re: question about kodi

Lovely. Given your supposed level of expertise you may first of all want to disable the debug symbols in Update Manager -> Edit -> Software Sources but even then you are showing many more available packages than I am on Mint 19.2 without a Kodi PPA installed. In any case, one or more of the kodi-pv...

Re: State of the art

if Americans are raving against Huawei, it has to be good... I hope that's a joke.... The threat of a foreign government taking control of essential parts of the IT infrastructure is real. I think the USA is quite right in taking that threat very seriously. Totally agree here +1 Best to get...

Thanks. The scanner is now found on simple scan but it now says it cannot connect. I am really puzzled?
Probably wrong address for the scanner.
Did you run the install script?

Re: Cannot write to external new HD

Hello,

You can change the owner of the external drive from root to your login name/group.

Lets say you login as --> slinger
Your new external is mounted at /mnt/myexternaldrive

chown -R slinger:slinger /mnt/myexternaldrive

Re: More Linux Mint installations on SSDs than on old HDDs?

Running Mint 18.3 here with a SSD and when I first installed it, It set it up in the background. After install, Look in /etc/cron.daily and you should see a script named 'fstrim'. The contents of the script are: /sbin/fstrim --all || true Since its in the cron.daily folder it should run every day. I...

Re: Brother scanner will not work under simple scan

What you should do is download the install script and run it. It will walk you thru setting up the printer for both printing and scanning. It will download all the drivers for you. What is probably missing if you didnt use the install script is the path to the scanner in the setup routine. While the...

Re: My Rsync Cron Job is Not writing the log as intended

My options for rsync gives the stats. If you want it to report all file copy output to the log then you have to redirect the sandard output to the log. I just do stats because if I redirect standard output the log becomes quite huge. To trim the log I use logrotate which you can follow some of the p...

Re: My Rsync Cron Job is Not writing the log as intended

Im going to post a portion of my backup script here and you can compare. The thing that I do differently is that I have a script (bash) to run the backup instead of having it all in the crontab. This makes it easier if I make changes to my backup script. My log file is located in the /var/log direct...

Re: Who is still using Mint 18?

Im stuck on 18.3 Sylvia because my Teamviewer 9 licensed version (lifetime license) will not run on 19. Im dreading the day I have to move to 19 along with some clients of mine running 18.3 .

If anyone has an older TV running on 19 I sure would love to hear from you.

Re: ata2: SRST failed (errno=-16) cannot find Boot Manager

If I remember right SRST means soft reset. This would indicate that the operating system was having an issue talking to the device (in this case the hard drive) and finally issued a soft reset of the drive. If this is in a laptop then it could be that the drive connection was a bit iffy and if you ...

OP - I read your post over at WINE. I think it might have been a bit aggressive in reporting your problem. So, They fired back in defensive mode.

I pretty much do the same thing. Doesnt really hurt to stay current on things even if you do not use them. As for the kernel, You can always revert back to previous kernels if there is a problem.

Re: Problem booting Mint

Some more info maybe, What kernel are you running? If you can just boot to command line and do uname -a Can you try booting to a previous kernel and see if it works? Ive got the RX480 and quite happy with it. I do believe that the drivers are included in the kernel. Thats why I mentioned the above.
