Re: Just say NO to Mint19

I will add, as a hobbyist and nothing more, that if you company just upgraded from XP long after it went out of support then that does not seem prudent either - cheap maybe . . . I really can't say but that is what occurs to me - again I admit I am way out of my depth. I think your right on target ...

Re: Just say NO to Mint19

A simple post asking about upgrading versions or just searching the forum would have revealed that its not the recommended way to go. I run my own business with many residential customers that I have setup with Linux Mint. They are all running 18.3 . Since they are quite happy there is no reason to ...

Re: webcam not recognised

Well, It certainly does not show up on the USB bus. Incidently, The output of 'dmeg' is your boot up information. Thats where it is going thru and discovering all your devices and setting up memory and other fun stuff. Not too helpful in a case like this unless you run this command: dmesg |grep usb ...

Re: How to Spoil the Stew, and guarantee a new user will never come back

It certainly can be tough out there in some of the forums. I think a lot of beginners will try some advanced flavor of linux and not understand it. Then they ask the noob questions and get the rude replies. After that they gravitate back to windows. I have found LM to be a great forum. Also, LM is p...

I think It took me about 20 minutes to install at most and it really does a lot. Ill stick with GNUcash for my accounting and then IN for my billing a...

Re: MythTV - help needed, please

I run mythtv :) Love it. Infact, My GF has taken it over - lol. Check your storage areas first. Make sure the permissions are correct. Go thru your logs and look for the issue as it says. I set mine up via MythBuntu release that I do not think is supported anymore. When we had it working just right ...

Re: Can't eject Usb pen-drive

So, To my understanding the message that it isnt finished writing to the drive never changes. Its always on and never clears. What I would do is reformat the drive and see if that makes a difference. Do this so we have more info: Open up a term windows and type this in: tail -f /var/log/kern.log The...

Re: Can't eject Usb pen-drive

Sorry, I guess my link does not go to where its suppose to now. So, I will have to explain a bit. Flash devices do have finite read and write times. Sooner or later they wear out. If you are syncing to them all the time they will wear out quite quickly. So, In order to keep the extended life the ope...

Re: Does anybody still use DVDs?

I will use a dvd when working on someones computer because some computers with the dreaded EFI dont like flash stick booting. They do seem to be already setup for booting from the dvd drive. So, To save time I just boot up a dvd. With everyones bios settings kinda different I can waste a lot of time...

Re: Can't eject Usb pen-drive

You can mount the drive with the sync option but read this link below before you even venture there. It will help explain why this is a seriously bad idea. Its dated but probably holds true today. I will let others chime in if there is more to tell. http://readlist.com/lists/vger.kernel.org/linux-ke...

Re: My RAID needs help. [SOLVED]

I got it. After several attempts at stopping and starting the raid it finally started with 2/3 drives in degraded mode. I dont know what the heck happened to the drive letters but perhaps I read them wrong? They are /dev/sdg and /dev/sdh I am now frantically copying the files to a new 2tb drive!!! S...

Re: My RAID needs help.

I just applied "Coffee's Law" : Post about a problem and very soon afterwards you will figure it out on your own. Im almost there! Here is what I have done to correct the RAID5 detected as RAID0: mdadm --remove /dev/md127 Then I have done a re-assembly again (noticed for some reason the drive naming...

My RAID needs help.

I run an external JOBD 4 bay hard drive box via usb3 that is a RAID5 array with 3 members. I had one drive fail and one of the others has about 130 bad sectors. These drives are 1tb each. I store all my movies and such on them. I have physically removed the bad drive and left the other two in the bo...

Re: Is this me or You Tube??? Crazy?

Ok, I got it - Its the extension for firefox "Youtube classic". Evidently UT has made some change to their site or whatever and now the plugin seems to have an issue. I loaded the plugin into firefox running "that other operating system" in a VM and as soon as I loaded the plugin it created the same...

Re: How to copy today's file to remote host .

I would think using Rsync would be a good approach. It will sync directories for you.

Re: Nerdy types dismissing Linux Mint.

I really dont care what other people have to say about Mint. I do very well making my own mind up and making my own decisions. As far as Iam concerned Linux Mint is the defacto version of linux that anyone starting out should be using. Its too bad that LM doesnt have a server version. I envision tha...
