Re: Can't boot Mint on HP Laptop

That's fixed the boot problem.

The driver manager shows microcode firmware available for the AMD A6-9220 RADION R4, 5 COMPUTE CORES 2C+3G. I have selected that but I still get the "Running in software rendering mode" and slow graphics performance. No other drivers are shown.

Re: Can't boot Mint on HP Laptop

Thanks but as I haven't installed anything yet other than updates it might be quicker just to re-install mint 18.3 from the live usb. When I've done that how do I change the grub entry to use nomodeset without editing it each time? I gather that, unlike the original grub, I can't just edit the file....

Re: Can't boot Mint on HP Laptop

I spoke too soon. After booting with nomodeset I booted into W10 and then back into Mint without editing the line to add nomodset. I had assumed that the editing would be saved. It froze on booting. So restarted and now when I start it goes to a "grub>" prompt. I presume the grub is corrupted. How c...

Re: Can't boot Mint on HP Laptop

Thanks again. Followed that and the live usb ran O.K. Installed it, rebooted and I was back in Windows however I soon discovered that the boot sequence had put Windows before Ubuntu/grub - changed that and it booted into Linux. I haven't tried booting Windows from Grub yet. I'm updating the Mint ins...

Re: Can't boot Mint on HP Laptop

Thanks guys,

Yes W10 is installed in UEFI mode. sda1 is a small partition labeled EFI.
I will give the suggested "nomodeset" option a go with 18.3 again. Just waiting for my usb stick to have that version put on it again.

Will report back.

Thanks Austin.texas
I have already seen that but it doesn't seem to help with my situation - or is my 72 year old brain just getting overloaded?

[SOLVED sort of] Can't boot Mint on HP Laptop

Hi all I've installed various versions of Linux on a number of machines but stuck on this one. My present laptop has broken hinges and needs replacing. Bought a new laptop; HP Laptop 17-ak0xx, AMD A6-9220 RADION R4, Graphics card AMD Device 98e4 I did all the usual: Disabled secure boot, enabled leg...

Re: Cinnamon crashed and goes to fallback mode after updating

Has anyone found a solution to this one yet? I did an update on my desktop machine yesterday before reading this and have the same problem.

If all else fails I guess it will be safest to do a backup and then install LM 18.2.

Re: Add new category to menu?

Another minor problem with the menu editor is that I can add an icon to the new category entry and it shows up OK in the editor but doesn't appear when the menu is opened. I can live without the icon though.

[SOLVED]"python-support" module missing from repository

Having recently changed from Mint 17.3 to Mint 18.2 on my laptop I have discovered a dependency problem with PyCAM, a Python application I use. The repository for 17 contained the required module "python-support" but it is missing from the repository for 18. Is there a reason for that? Is there a sa...

Re: Add new category to menu?

Thanks Cecilleaux I should have mentioned that I'm using Cinnamon 18.2. The menu editor is slightly different to previous versions but following your post and swapping left and right I have managed to get there although dragging items doesn't work. I had to copy and paste. The referring to new categ...

Add new category to menu?

I am trying to reduce the clutter of icons on my desktop. I have a number of programs installed related to CNC and would like to replace the icons with menu entries grouped together under a new category. The menu editor doesn't seem to have an option to add a new category. Can anyone suggest a way t...

err... how will it know which pdf document to open? If you have already found it using the file browser you only have to left click on it.

Re: Sharing HP Deskjet Printer/Scanner via router

Just a quick update: Received my new HP ENVY 7640 printer. It installed fine on the laptop using hp-setup. Scanner and printer all working. On the desktop machine hp-setup couldn't find the printer even when given the correct IP address, however CUPS found it and installed it just fine. Thanks every...

Re: Sharing HP Deskjet Printer/Scanner via router

I see it has two USB ports for connection. Have you tried both? Yes. Also, does this have a web interface to change settings? Most routers do and can be accessed by typing in an address in your web browser (example: http://192.168.1.1) Yes it does and there is the option to turn printer sharing on ...
