Re: Sharing HP Deskjet Printer/Scanner via router

It's the router supplied by my internet/telephone/TV provider. SFR La Box NB6: https://assistance.sfr.fr/internet-et-box/box-nb6/box-nb6-adsl-caracteristiques.html I'm just wondering if it's time to buy a new printer/scanner with WiFi or Ethernet connectivity but will Xsane detect that O.K? Can anyo...

Quite, that's what I have been trying to do. I can share the printer part that way but the scanner part isn't seen by Xsane.

Re: Sharing HP Deskjet Printer/Scanner via router

Thanks hrmcrm but that just results in no device found. For now I have just gone back to sharing the printer from my desktop machine. I can then access the printer from my laptop provided the desktop is switched on and have to use the desktop machine for scanning.

Re: Sharing HP Deskjet Printer/Scanner via router

Thanks pdc_2. Most of that tutorial covers setting up a Linux machine to act as a scanner server. I was trying to get my router to act as a printer/scanner server. That way any machine on my network could access the printer/scanner without an other machine being powered up. My SFR router has the fac...

Sharing HP Deskjet Printer/Scanner via router [SOLVED]

I have a router supplied by my ISP, SFR in France. It has the ability to share printers connected to it. I can install the printer (HP Deskjet F4280) using the address; socket/::192.168.1.1:9100 and the printer works on any machine on my network. However Xsane doesn't detect the scanner. Is it possi...

Re: Firefox not playing some videos

Well I'll be ******. They are all working again and I haven't done anything. We had a power outage so a full reboot as opposed to a soft reboot might have fixed it?

Thanks anyway for your help MintyO

Firefox not playing some videos

For a while now Firefox is not able to play most videos on the BBC website (www.bbc.com/news). They play fine on Chromium browser. Is this a general problem or is it just me? Any ideas?

I have just updated Firefox again to 53.0.3 and it is the same.

My introduction to computers was with an analogue computer for solving differential equations at university in 1964. The following year I learned Algol on an Elliot 803 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIxZ1i8pvZI and a couple of years later wrote assembly code programs for it to test a VDU we had bu...

Re: Work around to add L2TP connection for VPN on Linux Mint

Ask your VPN provider for an OpenVPN configuration file then install "network-manager-openvpn" from Synaptic. Go to Settings>Network, select the + to add a new connection and just follow the prompts to add a vpn from the file. If your current provider can't provide the file I would recommend IPVanis...

Re: Upgrade. I'm installing a new 250Gb Samsung 850 EVO SSD. Tips for performance settings? Compatible?

It's a good idea to minimise unnecessary writes to the SSD to prolong its life. There is a good guide here: https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/ssd.

I have also put my home partition on a HDD which only slows things down marginally and reduces wear on the SSD.

Re: Granting An Application Root Access

Because you were running the scanning program as root it has probably created the file (and folder?) with root access only. In your file explorer window navigate to view your home folder, right click on it and select "Open as root". Now navigate to the files the scanning program created for your sca...

Software / hardware clock accuracy?

Can somebody please tell me whether the applet displays system time or hardware clock time? I am asking as I have been using it to check the timing of an accurate mechanical clock and I'm seeing day to day jitter of over half a second. I have ntpd running and repeatedly running hwclock in a terminal...

Thanks, that did it. I now have smbd running - just have to set up all the shares again as they seem to have gone AWOL.

[Solved] Lost Samba after upgrade from 17.2 to 17.3 cinnamon

Hi I did the upgrade a few days ago (thought I'd hold off 18 for a while) and have just tried to access another machine running 17.1 Cinnamon on my local network. I couldn't see any network in Nemo so I checked to see if Samba was running (using service --status-all) and found that Samba was listed ...

Re: Mint and Updating the System Time Using NTP Time Servers

O.K. I've checked with "sudo service --status-all" and ntp does seem to come up on startup so I guess all is well. It does seem strange that ntpdate seems to have been installed without the configuration file - or am I missing something?

Re: Mint and Updating the System Time Using NTP Time Servers

I am trying to use my laptop clock to verify the operation of a precision mechanical timepiece I've built and I'm seeing a random daily variation of about 0.5 seconds. Having found this thread I thought I should check that I am connecting to the time server: Typing ntpdate -q in a terminal gives me ...

. . . or just install Grub Customizer from the Software Manager in the Mint Menu. Run it and, in the "List configuration" tab, move the Windows 10 entry to the top of the list.

Re: Question: Why the C syntax in programming?

As someone who has been in the major for years, knows a good amount of the history and has done a bunch of coding for school I can tell you that the reason C syntax is so praised is because it's huge improvement over what came before it. As others have mentioned in a way it introduced flow-control ...

Re: Win 10 Anniversary update

Does anyone have any definitive information on what exactly is screwed up by this update? There are lots of horror stories around on the web about the effects on dual boot systems, "It has deleted my Linux partition", or "It has screwed up GRUB2", or "It has overwritten the MBR". Some say it's OK wi...
