Re: Gnome shell crash (Solved - maybe?)
@pluraldave - Had another look at this problem because I noted that my recently-used.xbel has returned of its own accord. I wonder if this was due to a gnome-shell update that occurred on the 10th, it might have been. It's due to you using your computer. Every time you open a file it writes to rece...

Re: Gnome shell crash (Solved - maybe?)
I had this too. Any overview search starting with g or l caused a crash with the same/similar libnvidia error as above. @Viking: recently-used.xbel is the recent documents file, which gnome-shell uses to display your recent documents when you search. Why the recent documents list conflicts with the ...

Re: Forgotten password
Basically, you can't. All you can do is hope that you suddenly remember the password. You could set a new password for root, which would allow you to log in as root and then set a new password for your user. However, that will not change the passphrase that encrypts your data so that data will still...

Re: Is this war, with privilege? Not on MY comp!!!
I'm not sure what there is to be solved. If you need to edit a protected file/folder you do so using sudo or gksu as appropriate. If you don't even know what sudo/gksu is then there is good reason not to be editing those files.
Also, +1 to the locks/house analogy.

Re: Issue configuring Wireless HP printer
1. Have you installed hplip-gui (from synaptic/command line) and are using it to set up the printer? 2. If the printer is connected to the network (i.e. has an IP address) wirelessly then you have to choose to add a *network* printer not a wireless printer. "LP1 option" sounds like you are...

That's for an old version of Mint. In Mint 12 (main/Gnome) search for "screen" in the menu or find it in the control panel and turn off screen locking.

Re: way to have different colour folder for specific folder?
Assuming you are using the main edition of Mint (Gnome desktop, Nautilus file browser) 1. Right click on the folder you want to change 2. Select Properties 3. In the window that opens is a picture of the current icon. Click this to select a new icon. Be warned though, once you change an icon like th...

Re: My environment changed for other when i removed conky
It looks like the config files are messed up. Look at the hidden files in your home folder to see where the xfce folder is. I think it's probably ~./config/xfce4.
Rename this folder to something like xfce4_backup, after which I guess a simple log out/in should recreate the default settings.

Better to start a new thread for specific issues rather than posting in a discussion thread. 1. Don't know. 3. a) Flick your mouse up into the top left corner to activate the overlay and then drag and drop the application onto the workspace you would like to move it to. b) Use the keyboard shortcut ...

Re: Another DE option for Mint 12 - Cinnamon
I'm thinking in Mint 11 workspaces had to be added to the panel by the user, and was not there by default. Yes, but this also lead to the problems of a) New users not discovering the workspaces feature b) Users who had not discovered workspaces accidentally changing workspace and not knowing how to...

Re: Compiz issues
You can't. The panels are part of Gnome-shell, which uses the Mutter window manager. You can only have one window manager running. If you turn on the Compiz window manager you automatically turn off Mutter. If you turn off Mutter then by extension you turn off Gnome-shell and the panels. If you real...

Re: Another DE option for Mint 12 - Cinnamon
Gnome Shell is optimized for keyboard launching and that fact alone makes it obviously not aimed at tablets +1000. Certain features of GS looking similar to a mobile OS does not make GS a mobile OS. It's all down to how GS behaves, which is nothing like any mobile OS, and clearly designed with desk...

They're all in your home folder. Just open up Nautilus (your file manager) and press ctrl+H to view the hidden config files/folders.

Re: Good paritioning scheme?
"/" is the root of the file system. Everything you don't create a separate partition for goes in the root partition. Each installation has its own / partition. You can't have a "mint" partition and a "/" partition like you have suggested in your first post - these are t...

Re: Gnome3/Cinnamon loading same broken desktop
Unfortunately it is your graphics card driver that is the problem. ATI's driver has massive issues with Gnome-shell (hence Cinnamon). As far as I know your only option at this time is to use the open-source driver. With the logout issues you could try looking in the log files (/var/log/) to see if y...
