Re: Gnome3/Cinnamon loading same broken desktop

Unfortunately it is your graphics card driver that is the problem. ATI's driver has massive issues with Gnome-shell (hence Cinnamon). As far as I know your only option at this time is to use the open-source driver. With the logout issues you could try looking in the log files (/var/log/) to see if y...

Re: Gnome3/Cinnamon loading same broken desktop

This screenshot is taken from when I logged into Cinnamon from the login screen (I clicked the correct one in the gear symbol menu). My MATE desktop looks completely different that this. My mistake - that's the fallback mode ("gnome classic") not mate. I didn't realise fallback was able to look lik...

Re: Gnome3/Cinnamon loading same broken desktop

6 replies and no-one has pointed out that the screenshot is of the MATE desktop not Cinnamon? You need to log out of your current session, then at the log-in screen click the gear symbol and select the Cinnamon session. When I installed "Lisa" I kept my /home folder from my last install. Has this sc...

Re: Another DE option for Mint 12 - Cinnamon

What's the reasoning behind having the notifications in the top right? Would it not make more sense for them to be located with the system tray (wherever a user chooses to have it)? What notifications are you referring to? The only thing in the top right is the infinty symbol which brings up the ac...

Re: Poll: The future look of Gnome Shell in Linux Mint

My vote is for something else - the default gnome-shell setup (possibly with minor optional Mint tweaks). My "second place" vote would be for something like the second option that effectively "replaces" gnome-shell's dash and drops the top panel. It's either/or. Having both GS and a gnome-2-like bot...

Re: Linux Mint 12, and beyond?

I could be wrong but it seems that the tweak tools are having to actually play with the underlying code to do the configurations. No, all the tweak tool does is change gconf/dconf options (that already exist) via an easy GUI interface for altering those settings that the tweak developers consider i...

Re: Cannot change permissions on drive/folder

What type of filesystem does the tv partition have? If it's NTFS or the like you need to set the owner on mounting in fstab. If it's a Linux filesystem try using the full path of the mountpoint, perhaps it didn't like the relative path.

Re: Ive broke my Linux Mint!!!

Given that you haven't got an xorg.conf don't worry about the step to remove xorg.conf and just move onto the instructions for the next step: Please execute this command in any terminal with a $ or # sign: To restore nvidia graphics driver (only official one, not needed for experimental driver): sud...

Re: LM11 auto log off at random click

Sounds to me like the X server is crashing. Compiz or your graphics card driver are the most likely culprits. You can have a look at the X server logs in /var/log/ for clues.

If it's Compiz you might want to downgrade it. See the tutorials section for details.

Re: How do you 'lock down' Gnome?

From memory: Press <alt>+<F2> Enter "gconf-editor" Navigate to apps>gnome-panel Lockdown panel should be one of the options. If you can't find it you can always lock it through Ubuntu tweak, which gives whoever you give the computer to an easy way to unlock the panel in the future if they want to ch...

Re: Where are the error reports?

Unfortunately, the issue here is the rude way in which your second post came across, thereby guaranteeing the response that you didn't like.

As for error messages:

1. the output of the terminal command

Code: Select all

dmesg
2. In /var/log See here for details.

Re: recover partition??

If you want to add Mint 11 then you have to shrink a partition and then make a new partition for Mint 11, leaving Mint 10 in place. If you want to shrink the Mint 10 partition you will have to use the GParted on the Mint 11 live CD/DVD/USB or from another installed OS as you cannot alter the Mint 10...

Re: recover partition??

You don't. What you're asking doesn't make sense. You only need to recover a partition if you delete a partition, and you should not be deleting any partition that you want to keep. It would be best if you explain exactly what it is that you are trying to do along with at least one of the following:...

Re: upgrade from 64 bit to 32 bit Gnome

Restore all your documents in home but when it comes to the hidden configuration files it's generally best to be cautious. You really only need to restore the important folders, for example your browser and email profiles, pretty much everything else will be a few clicks once you come to use that pr...

IIRC the issue isn't the age of the computer, but a bug with the ATI driver (or a bug in GS when using the ATI driver).

What about if you:

1. Press <Alt>+<F2>
2. Enter "gconf-editor"
3. Navigate to apps>gnome-session>options

Is the auto-save option still there?

You can't use own_window_type desktop, try normal/override.
