Re: Ubuntu may move to monthly releases like Firefox

Ubuntu's issues aren't caused by the release schedule, but by the culture at Canonical to push things before they are ready. Changing the release schedule won't solve the issues if the culture isn't changed, but if the culture is changed then there is no need to change the release schedule.

Re: nForce 3 laptop, 512 MB PC2700. Which Mint-KDE?

If the hardware drivers utility offers you a proprietary driver for the graphics card install it. Any work you can shift from the CPU to the GPU will speed things up. However, I wouldn't use KDE on a laptop with only 512MB of memory. Your laptop is most likely swapping like mad at which point you're...

Re: Ubuntu Tweak

Ah. Sorry. So, where can one tweak Mint without having to install Ubuntu Tweak? Let's say, for example, I want to remove the minimize / maximise buttons? In that specific example you would: 1.Press <Alt>+<F2> 2. Enter "gconf-editor" 3. Navigate to apps>metacity>general 4. Change the line menu:minim...

Re: SOLVED-Wireless site survey utility in the software mana

They use the drivers and firmware, they are not part of it, even if they are bundled with the Windows driver. Firmware is the software on the device itself that causes the device to work. The driver is the software that allows the operating system to communicate with and control the device. The appl...

Re: WHERE DO APPS GO WHEN YOU INSTALL THEM?

Ok, just installed wavemon - it's a command line application. To run it open a terminal and enter wavemon Sorry for the histrionics. Tomorrow's another day. Still pretty pissed about all the dead ends and rabbit holes in mint, but I'm realizing that I'll just wreck myself (and get kicked out of here...

Re: Wireless site survey utility in the software manager?

Answered in the other thread. As for the driver don't try installing it - it is already installed and the apps in your screenshots are not components of any driver but additional utilities.

Re: Login customisation: Faenza icons not shown

You have to so it as root. Either right-click on a folder and choose "open as administrator" to open Nautilus in root mode or do it via the command line: sudo cp -r ~/Downloads/Faenza /usr/share/icons (assuming you extracted the icon theme so it is in a normal folder simply called "Faenza" not an ar...

Re: WHERE DO APPS GO WHEN YOU INSTALL THEM?

s it not there because it's a "docapp for Window Maker" ? Do I need to know how to work with "docapps" before utilizing such an app? Is this common for software that I might install via synaptic/softwaremgr/packagemgr? If the description is Addon X for Program Y then usually you will need to have a...

Re: Printer for 64bit system

You have to change to the directory (folder) in which you downloaded the debs before you can run the commands, or specify the directory in the command. Eg: cd ~/Downloads sudo dpkg -i --force-all dcp195clpr-1.1.2-1.i386.deb or sudo dpkg -i --force-all ~/Downloads/dcp195clpr-1.1.2-1.i386.deb Assuming...

Re: Login customisation: Faenza icons not shown

Did you install the icons to /usr/share/icons or ~/.icons? They will need to be in /usr/share/icons.

*edit: Tested the code given in the link - Faenza icons work if they are in the right folder.

Re: WHERE DO APPS GO WHEN YOU INSTALL THEM?

I installed Plasma-Widget-Wifi and WifiMon from the software manager. Now I can't find them. They don't show up in via any search commands. Not in the panel. Not on the desktop. Not found in Menu->Applications->All->....... Plasma-Widget-Wifi is a KDE plasma widget. You have to be running the KDE d...

Re: Window sides for resizing and minimizing too small

The fault lies with the Metacity window border theme. There has been a recent trend to create themes with extremely narrow left/right/bottom borders for aesthetic reasons which severely impact on usability. Trying a different theme might solve your issues. Gnome-look has a wide selection of themes. ...

It's an early eePC with a 16GB SSD and a 4GB SSD, not two partitions on a 20GB drive so changing the size isn't really an option.

Re: System down... not starting up; help please !

Uninstalling nautilus uninstalls gnome-session and nautilus-share. If you didn't reinstall gnome-session after you removed it that would explain why your gnome session is now broken. Choose to log in to a terminal session and sudo apt-get install gnome-session See if that fixes the login issue. The ...

Re: Confused on how to find my 2nd HDD

I don't know why Nautilus is not working in the installed version and haven't seen any previous reports on how to fix it. It should work in the same way as it does on the LiveCD. Perhaps you just had a bad install somehow and a reinstalation would somehow cure it (or just reinstalling Nautilus). It ...
