Re: GNOME3/KDE4/XFCE QOTD

If it's just the icon size in the shell you don't like that is easily fixable by installing a theme where the icons are the size you want or editing the css of the current theme (look for icon-grid).

Re: Panel icons

The weather icon in your first post is part of the clock, not an indicator like the one in the second screenshot. As for the spacing it's really Ubuntu's fault for creating a second applet that handles spacing differently to the one that already existed. The only option is to use an icon theme that ...

If Google wants us to trust it with our online lives it needs to do a lot better than this: http://www.twitlonger.com/show/bt5akp Having read the follow up to that post I think I can safely give the following advice: If you find an "artistic image" which you believe should be classed as child porno...

Re: Quotes in the terminal

The files are under /usr/share/games/fortunes You'll have to edit the text files that need alterations and then use strfile from the command line to generate the new .dat files, ie sudo strfile /usr/share/games/fortunes/filename /usr/share/games/fortunes/filename.dat There are a lot of quotes though...

Re: Quotes in the terminal

Open a terminal and type the following command: gksu gedit /etc/bash.bashrc Scroll to the bottom and delete the line /usr/bin/mint-fortune if you want to remove it permanently. Put a # at the front of the line if you just want to comment it out so you can reactivate it at a later date. Save and clos...

Re: Access Files From Windows

If you want to access files from both operating systems my advice would be to create a data partition, formatted as NTFS which both systems will be able to read.

For security reasons I would avoid any software that allows Windows (and hence any Windows malware) access to your Linux operating system.

Re: Google Chrome vs. Chromium

1GB of RAM? There is something seriously wrong with your version of Chromium. I'd start by looking at the addons you've installed and/or the profile - especially if you've just copied it over from the Windows version.

If you want to install Chrome just go to the Chrome website and download it.

Re: my kindle 3 won't connect to my pc no usb drive shown.

I have a Kindle 3 and it works perfectly with LM 10 Gnome 64. It is recognised as a digital media device rather than a USB drive - there is no popup but it is auto-mounted (under /media/Kindle) and visible in Nautilus. Also, I haven't installed mtpfs to make it work either. Downloading to the comput...

Re: Husse

The Husse fortune quotes can be found (from a Mint installation) in /usr/share/games/fortune/ You should use execi instead of exec if you want a custom interval, specified in seconds as ${execi interval command} For instance if you had fortune installed you could just use ${execi 60 /usr/games/fortu...

Re: refresh my memory on disabling passwords please !

done windows for years and xp wise you're in as 'root' all the time That is precisely why Windows machines get viruses. The whole "only user" argument from your first post only holds if the machine is not connected to a network and completely isolated from the outside world. Connecting to the inter...

Re: Does x-sensors

24C sounds too low for what I assume is a stock system (judging by the signature stats). The BIOS reading will be from a thermal diode built into the motherboard while coretemp is supposed to read from the internal sensors in the CPU itself. The internal chip temperature should be higher. Also, in m...

Re: Oracle Frees OpenOffice

For instance, again, Gentoo has both in its repos but Gentoo users choose to install and use one or the other, not both. That's the real choice. And left to the user. Gentoo doesn't supply the option of Sun/Oracle Openoffice or LibreOffice. Gentoo supplies the option of Go-oo 3.2.1 (which retains O...

Re: Gnome 3

Gnome2 was better than windows because of its great support for virtual desktops. I would like to argue that windows is better than gnome3 because it has okay support for virtual desktops (virtuawin) You have to be joking. One of, if not the defining feature of Gnome-shell is workspace management. ...
