what I've often done, is to use Package Manager aka synaptic:
- select the required program - - mark for Completely Remove.
then apply - - that operation.

then - - start - - again.

it was using the VB version 5.0.x that caused the same error for one of my PCs. & I'd just keep running the stated fix, for that error - - did you get an required fix, each time ?. in the end, I'd upgraded to VB version 5.1.x with a clean install of the virtualbox program, itself. & that did fix tha...

the Linux program Gparted can format your usb stick to the HFS+ file system,
& then you can write that DMG file to that usb stick, with that dmg2iso command.

or maybe you can just copy the contents of that DMG file to the usb stick ? not sure of that one.
