Re: USB mandatory

it does depend, a little on what the original Operating System was:
viewtopic.php?f=42&t=163126
that's written for win-8x, but does apply to win-10 as well.

do have a read of that, and look at the sections on Fast Start,, Secure Boot,, UEFI areas.

Re: Multi boot system - Linux install warns of breaking boot of other OSes

YES - that is most definitely possible. 8) you simply install LinuxMint onto that proposed drive,,, and make that drive, the 1st drive ( SDa ) and install the Linux Grub Boot Loader to that drive's boot sector. the installer should pick up, the two other windows systems, & add them both to it's Boot...

Re: Dropbox's New Rules

you most probably do get a choice about which format, to use,, and it may not be defaulting to the ext4 format file system. if your partition is not in the ext 4 format,, then you would have to re-format that partition to ext 4,, and thus suffer an loss of any data on that partition, as well. - unle...

Re: keeping firmware time after linux mint, going back to windows

Yep - that's how it works, here as well.
8)

if you are on-line, then just wait & either system will correct your system time by contacting an NTP server.
- after just a few minutes of being on-line.

Re: Microsoft to drive even more users to Linux with DesktopAsAService

it's a strange one - it's definitely MS-Dos_7 :o technically that would have been win 95a or something, but it's not - ie: win v4.095a - a VER command states what it is - MS-DOS_7 the thing is, that I've stuffed up, & I've chucked away the micro box, That I'd planned to use, as an replacement. :( & ...

Re: Virtualbox error rc=-1904

last year, I'd been having that Virtualbox error rc=-1904 issue,
and only solved that, by Completely Removing Vbox in Package Manager,
& then re-installing again, with a file from the VirtualBox site itself:
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads
and I've no issues, ever since.

At the bottom of the page.
https://driverbrother.net/brother-mfc-j497dw-driver/
try https://driverbrother.net/?s=j480, but that shows as win/mac only & maybe not for Linux systems.

do you want Colour or Black & White only ?.

Re: Virtualbox error rc=-1904

you don't - that's an Terminal command ..

so, from Terminal run that /sbin/vboxconfig prefaced by sudo
then type your normal password & hit Enter Key

watch what happens in the terminal interface, for any errors.
- if there is none, then try running Vbox again. ..

I just tried this. It returned immediately, no indication of anything being modified. Still cannot install Wine, same error. Thanks though. Any other ideas? Maybe Timeshift? Ed it may do that, but you can still hit Refresh & then see if the Apply icons is still greyed out or not. - if it isn't grey...

Re: partition advice

then using a GPT type partition system:
- will require LinuxMint 64 bit & a efi partition as well.
8)
it may pay you to manually create your partitions by using Gparted from the Live Media,
& then use the 'something else' option in the installer program.

Re: partition advice

if you plan on any dual boot with win-10, then you could need an efi partition.
- otherwise - no, it's not needed.

are you going to use a GPT type partitioning system ? rather than the older ms-dos type system?.

Re: partition advice

how many partitions do you require?
- root
- home
- swap
- data
- temp

the list go on & on
- what size ? depends on the SSD size, of course.
the first three, would a good start & maybe even the first four,
but - too many & you do slow down your system, somewhat.
