Re: Faster than Mint?

Hi

For what it's worth, you might like to try Antix, which is specifically designed to run on older hardware. You can try it as a live distro, just like Mint.

Re: Bluray drive problem- solved, and thank you.

Hi The software is simply called AQA with the suffix of the year. Unfortunately, examination boards in Britain are a bit like tax offices- they are never wrong... I appreciate the suggestions you made, but I'm afraid I'm stuck with their software, as they won't allow people to use anything else. Als...

Re: Bluray drive problem- solved, and thank you.

Hi, Phd21 and others The exam board is AQA, based in the UK. They won't allow markers to use any software other than theirs. In any case, I prefer to use my Linux computer for fun stuff and keep my office area for work. I don't like the idea of bringing work into my living room.I have always used Br...

Re: Bluray drive problem- solved, and thank you.

Hi all First, I used the same cables, but simply swapped them over. Yes, both are SATA drives. Secondly, for GCSE exams, I actually don't see the papers, but a screenshot of them in the software I download from the exam board. I use this software to create text boxes and type how I have arrived at t...

Re: Bluray drive problem

Hi all First, many thanks for taking the trouble to reply. I do appreciate it. I've spent a lot of time on this last evening and this afternoon. I tried just about everything suggested on here. In the end, since I wanted one anyway, I bought a bluray burner disc drive. None too happy when it failed ...

Re: Bluray drive problem

Hi Muteant, Phd21 and others. In the following post viewtopic.php?f=90&t=279918&p=1542811#p1542811 - the Op states that, when trying to burn dual layer dvds, he or she had to disconnect the drive, presumably then reconnecting it to allow the bios to detect it afresh. I will take a look at th...

Re: Bluray drive problem

Hi
Many thanks for the reply. I'm with you in that I'd rather not install a lot of KDE dependencies.

I've edited my last post to add some more information, so hopefully that might help you good people help me.

Re: Bluray drive problem

Hi Many thanks for the replies. So I managed to boot from the USB memory stick, but it still won't play a DVD. I've found the post I mentioned earlier, which says that the poster has also experienced the drive becoming disabled when trying to burn a dual-layer disc: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthre...

Re: Bluray drive problem

Hi
Thanks for the replies.
I'll try to boot from a USB drive, but I've not had much success trying this in the past. I'll give it a go and get back to you.
I have one bluray drive and a DVD drive.
Ok, so booted from a live USB and it won't play a DVD. I guess I'm stuck here.

Re: Bluray drive problem

Hi Thanks for taking the trouble to reply. My main point is this: I can't play bluray discs any more, but I also can't boot from my bluray drive, even though it is set to boot from it in the bios. I simply get an I/O error. I don't know if there is a problem with the drive, or if it's been somehow d...

Re: Dual layer discs and bluray playing and burning?

Hi Thanks for taking the trouble to reply. You may well be right, but in the mean time, I want to be able to play bluray discs in my drive, and to rip them using MakeMKV. I have a lot of Bluray discs, too many to put onto external storage. In particular, I need to know if I can make my Bluray drive ...

Bluray drive problem- solved, and thank you.

Hi all I had my system nicely set up to play bluray discs in VLC. I used MakeMKV to link and they were playing ok. Then I tried to burn a dual layer disc. Since then, bluray discs won't play. I mistakenly thought that my bluray drive would burn dual layer discs- now I know that I'm wrong. I get a me...

Re: Is it safe to use older versions of Linux Mint that are no longer supported?

Hi
For what it's worth I agree that Antix is excellent for older hardware.
I've used it on an old (2010) laptop and for most tasks it runs just fine.
Hope this helps.

Re: Openshot basics

Hi Many thanks for the replies. I'm going to mark this as solved, although I'm finding a lot of conflicting information about playable formats. However, I'm finding Avidemux quite easy to use, except that, according to the program, I have no black spaces in the whole of a two-hour video. Anyway, it'...

Re: Openshot basics

Hi
Many thanks for the reply.
So far, I have been able to download an appimage of Avidemux, but I'll need to do some searching as to how to use it. I will post back, but I'll need a little time to learn. I tried a deb. package, but got an unresolved dependency error.
Thanks again.

Re: Openshot basics

Hi Thanks for your reply. Am I misunderstanding something very basic? My phone is a modern phone- a Xiaomi Mi Max 3. As I understand it, the SD card in a phone can only be formatted to FAT, not NTFS or any other format. I would be transferring the video to the micro SD card. Anyway, I would still be...

Openshot basics- solved and thank you.

Hi all First, I should say that as far as Openshot is concerned, I'm an absolute day one beginner. I have some videos (of cricket matches) that I'd like to view on my very large screen phone. I need to split them because they are over 6Gb and Android only uses Fat 32. My question is- what would be t...
