Re: Mint Mate 19 and Open DNS

Hi
Many thanks for the quick reply.
Of course I'll give this a try, although I'm not too confident as yet with the terminal.
Is there no way to do this in the edit connections tab, using the GUI?
I'll try this and get back to you.
Regards

Mint Mate 19 and Open DNS- solved, and thank you.

Hi, all I would like to use Open DNS for my computer, but I can only seem to find references to doing this in Cinnamon. I know that I need to click on my wired connection in Edit connections, and select ipv4 (I have disabled ipv6 for security reasons). I'm not sure of the next step, i.e. DHCP connec...

Wine and security?

Hi, all I've been thinking of installing Wine in order to install and play some retro Windows games. I know that some are against this idea, so would like to seek opinions on this in case it would compromise my security. The games I intend playing are low resource and do not require connection to th...

Re: bluray playing-menu not available- solved and thank you!

Hi Phs21 and others I thought I would try a different bluray disc and put another one (an old Stallone film) into the bluray drive. It works! So it seems, the problem was with that particular disc- The Bourne Identity. So, problem solved. By the way, Phd21, although I know you are active on this for...

Re: bluray playing-menu not available

Hi Phd21 and others Yes, when I read your suggestions, I felt sure at least one of them would work. Yes, I can at least play the disc, just not with menus. I have used MakeMKV a number of times and find it a useful program, also very easy to use. Occasionally I convert the file to mp4 format using H...

Re: bluray playing-menu not available

Hi Phd21 and others
Many thanks fort the replies. I've tried all of your suggestions, but unfortunately none of them have worked.
All the same, I do appreciate you taking the time to reply. Even though it hasn't worked, I have still learned something new.

Re: bluray playing-menu not available

Hi Phd21 and others I'm not actually sure what type of bluray it is. It says at the bottom of the blurb on the back ("The Bourne Identity"), Blu-Ray 825 973 0 . 11 The number on the disc (I'm shooting in the dark here for info) is 33445/ST/G51?RO- I can't tell if the last character is a no...

Re: bluray playing-menu not available

Hi all. Many thanks for the replies. I do appreciate them. No luck, I'm afraid- I still get the following message on opening the disc: Java required: This Blu-ray disc requires Java for menus support. The disc will be played without menus. I'm not sure if there is a solution- I have installed all of...

Re: bluray playing-menu not available

Hi Many thanks for the prompt replies. I should have put that I've not checked "don't show menus". inxi -Fxzd gives me the following: System: Host: Ancholme Kernel: 4.15.0-34-generic x86_64 bits: 64 gcc: 7.3.0 Desktop: MATE 1.20.1 (Gtk 3.22.30-1ubuntu1) Distro: Linux Mint 19 Tara Machine: ...

bluray playing-menu not available- solved and thank you!

Hi all I have managed to get my computer to play bluray discs, but at the beginning it says java isn't available, so disc will be played without menus. I use Makemkv to link bluray and VLC to play the discs. As far as I can tell, java is installed (I presume it comes as standard with Linux Mint). Sh...

Re: Hardware failure? Help, please!

Hi, all Many thanks for the replies. As it turned out, this was a slightly bizarre one. I had left, what turned out to be, a corrupt Sd card in my printer. As soon as I removed it, the computer booted just fine. Thank you to those who replied- the solution only occurred to me after a while. I don't ...

Re: Hardware failure? Help, please!

Hi all Many thanks for the replies. I really appreciate it. My problem is that I can't get the newly installed system to boot: I just get the same flashing cursor- flashing very quickly, by the way, in case that gives any indication of the problem. That's why I'm wondering if there's a hardware faul...

Re: Hardware failure? Help, please!

Hi Many thanks for the reply. Before failing to boot, my system was using the nVidia driver. At boot (of the live disc), I replaced quiet splash with nomodeset. I am using Mate 19, or trying to. Should that now work, or am I missing something? Despite using Mint for some time, I don't regard myself ...

Hardware failure? Solved, and thank you

Hi, all I came home from work to find that Mint wouldn't boot (at least as far as I could see). There was just a blinking cursor about a third of the way down the screen. I reinstalled, and the installer told me that the hard disc was already mounted. I decided to go ahead with the reinstall anyway....

Re: [SOLVED] Installing Mint on an ancient pre-historic laptop???

Hi For what it's worth (I know I'm not as experienced) I agree. You would be far better using Antix or MX Linux. The point is, they are up to date in terms of security, and are designed to run on older hardware. Older, now unsupported, versions of Mint (much as I loved them) have not received securi...

Re: stuttery window dragging changing window manager

Hi Since this doesn't seem to have been solved, I thought I'd draw your attention to this- it only applies if you have an nVidia graphics card, though On modern NVIDIA GPUs we’re able to get rid of screen tearing by using “Force Composition Pipeline” in NVIDIA-Settings: from the Linux mint page I re...

Re: Switching From Cinnamon To MATE

Hi
Running Mate from the live DVD or USB will only give you an approximation of how it performs.
It will run more slowly than if you install it.
Hope this helps

Re: stuttery window dragging changing window manager

Hi

Have a read of this post: https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3620
It recommends removing vsync, but since I don't use Cinnamon, I can't be sure if this will help.

Re: Switching From Cinnamon To MATE

Hi Can you back up your data and do a fresh install? If you can afford it, an external hard drive is a good investment, so you never need to worry about backup. It usually only takes about 15 minutes or so to install Mate. Alternatively, you could back up your documents to the cloud- Google gives yo...
