(SOLVED) 'sudo' command showing "*" for password

I'm not sure if it was announced (and I missed the memo) or if I'm seeing something that shouldn't be happening. Until recently I don't remember seeing "*" for the password characters when executing a command with sudo . Now I am - see attached images:. Is this expected behaviour or is something ami...

Re: HP Laserjet Pro MFP m130fn scanner not working

Take a look at the thread pointed to by the link in my signature. Pay particular attention to the #5 under Installing from Source . Yes, I know you've already installed, but #5 includes all packages required for both the building from source as well as those required for proper execution of the driv...

This should be a simple matter of installing the HP drivers from the Linux Mint repositories. Please see the page noted in my signature for a short tutorial.

Maybe you'll smile at this .... or maybe you won't, but the first thought that came to my mind was, "Find that switch with a | and O on it and press on the | . A better thought is to ask you a couple of questions (since my crystal ball is still in the shop): What do you mean by "best performance?" W...

Re: uefi or legacy installation

Or, here's a cute little dittie that I found:

Code: Select all

[ -d /sys/firmware/efi ] && echo UEFI || echo BIOS
Returns a one-word response depending on whether the file is present or not. If you are UEFI, then the file will exist and this will return "UEFI"; othewise it returns "BIOS".

Good news! Checksum verified using Hashcheck Install. Fast, easy, done! Checksums match, so I ran the Linux Mint 19 System from the disc I burned, and oh wow!! Absolutely beautiful! And .... It's been three or four days. How's it going? Did you get it installed? Did you encounter any problems? Got ...

Re: Need Guidance For Dual Booting

As you have older hardware it might be a good idea to give the LiveUSB a test run to make sure that all hardware is supported and LM spin you've downloaded (you haven't said which LM DE you are planning to install; Cinnamon, MATE, Xfce) will be responsive enough on your hardware.

As noted, SimpleScan should be able to access your scanner. A more full-featured scanner software is xsane (it's in the Software Manager, simple install).

Re: Installing drivers for my printer/scanner??

There are at least two ways to install the .deb file: Through the GUI: Open your file manager Navigate to the folder wherein you saved the downloaded file Right-Mouse-Click on the .deb file; this will give you a context menu Select the option that looks, more or less, like "Open with gdebi..." After...

How do I generate the SHA256 sum for my .iso image now that it's finally downloaded? I downloaded both of the txt files (sha256sum.txt) and
(sha256sum.txt.gpg) and placed them in the same folder (directory) as the .iso
For Windows, check out this page

Re: How to increase the size of a partition

With your DVD drive not available, another option would be to create a LiveUSB, boot from that, and run gparted in the live session.

My understanding is that one can not resize a mounted partition and a partition must be mounted to boot into it - thus the need for a Live Session.

Thank you, thank you! My download indicator says I have 1 day and 6 hours left. I have a family who slows the house connection down by streaming 24/7.
Sounds like a good reason to kick everyone off for 10 minutes to let the download complete in a reasonable amount of time. :D

Re: LMDE 3 is too slow and heavy?

I can't say where you've made an error in your LMDE install, but I'm pretty sure you have. LMDE is my distro of choice (I have one LM 19 - Cinnamon install) and have not experienced anything like what you have. One of my machines is an AMD Quad-Core, 16GB, NVidia card, and an SSD. Even with the clos...

As a side benefit, this card also have Bluetooth. Bought it on cyber monday. It had a $20 rebate for the day. All is well. Thank you for the ...
