Re: Make a Windoiws 8 bootable flash drive
Windows 8 is terrible. If you must use it, you can use brasero to burn the iso to a DVD. But installing window$ will break grub boot loader. So you'll have to install grub again after windows as holding shift at boot won't work anymore. You'll basically lose the ability to boot mint. Sent from my Ev...

Re: Ubuntu or Mint?
I use both Ubuntu 12.10 and Mint cinnamon 14 and mint is definitely the better performer. Also I haven't found an app yet for Ubuntu, that doesn't run under mint (if not better). For my windows apps, I use wine with the "play on Linux" front end. It's a nice GUI for wine and takes all the ...

Re: What are your top tips for a Newbie?
What I did to get used to Linux was, a lot of Google, installing apps through the terminal instead of the software manager (really helps to get comfortable with the terminal), and then install virtual box on your system and install arch Linux in a virtual machine. Some people argue that this isn't n...

Re: Cinnamon with Unity Dash?
What pushed me off Ubuntu and towards mint was the addition of "unity-lens-shopping" in Ubuntu 12.10. To have spyware in a Linux distro is utterly disgusting. With that said, unity isn't so bad if you have extra memory to burn. Cinnamon is just awesome though. I find it pretty cool that so...

World of goo is a great game. Bought it from the play store. Best on a tablet so you don't accidentally tap the wrong goo balls. And so far steam is running solid for me. Still missing my source engine games, but valve says they're porting the source games soon. And the game called "the cave&qu...

Re: A personal Linux milestone
I did a quick google search and found possible alternatives to mpeg streamclip. Hope this helps! and congrats on getting mint on your mac!
http://alternativeto.net/software/mpeg-streamclip/
Edit: it seems only a few of the programs in the list are Linux compatible. Hope it helps anyways

Re: Why is MATE being kept alive?
Cinnamon is by far my favorite. But MATE is also a VERY nice DE. If it weren't for cinnamon, I would definitely use MATE exclusively. I tried Fedora 17 with gnome 3 and I found it to be a steaming pile. Unity is even worse. I run Lubuntu 12.04 on my PowerBook G4 because of the light-weight lxde, but...

Re: Install Apps we only want in the Live CD?
You can always install a minimal OS like arch and then you alone are responsible for installing the apps you want. Including the desktop. Or I think mint is also available in a minimalistic version. I mean the one without codecs and stuff. I may be wrong. Sent from my HTC EVO 3D X515m using Tapatalk 2

Hey welcome Kaz! Great to see another linux noob and fellow student of python. Python is an awesome language and I love it. Have you started programming 2d games yet? Lots of fun with surprisingly minimal amounts of code.
Anyways, welcome!

Re: Re: Funny read about windows on the Desktop. :)
That was a pretty good read, and exactly my experience whenever I get a new computer. The sad thing is, it's usually easier to do it that way than trying to remove all the bloat. Not to forget Windows ME. I might even pay for the postage to get rid of that *&(!@*#^!(@ disk so I don't have to in...

Re: Linux Mint - not for the amateur
When installing ubuntu for the first time, I ejected the disc too. Totally understandable noob mistake :-D Other than that, I had a problem with kvm being "off" in my bios by default. Quick fix. Then installing AMD microbits. 30 seconds on google, 10 seconds in terminal, fixed. After a wee...

I still keep floppies around for solar eclipses. Break one open and you can use the film to protect your eyes while watching an eclipse. Granted its rare.

Haha thanks! Yeah I'm also using desura and "play on linux" as well (wine front-end). If you want a fun game for steam on linux, TF2 is free to play and runs on linux ^_^. I personally can't wait until the source engine games are ported. Need muh garry's mod! Sent from my HTC EVO 3D X515m ...

Distro walk of shame thread
What are some distros that you use, or have used, that are "out there", or not well known? Any particular linux distros or any other OS's that you could almost be ashamed of, even? Other than windows, of course. We're all a little ashamed to have used that one lol. I personally used a stra...

I'm using cinnamon right now. Find it a lot smoother than unity or kde. Haven't tried Kate yet, but I didn't care for gnome 2 that much.
