Re: What version for old netbook? 1GM RAM.

LM17 Mate 32bits works pretty well on an old computer of mine. The base is to find a DE that won't use 3D acceleration.

Re: What do I need to remotely maintain granny's computer?

My grandmother is almost 90 years old and she has her own computer. I live not far so when she has an issue I'm able to step by her place and fix it. At first I tried to make her try Windows. It was a complete mess she was completely lost and could remember where she was supposed to go and all this ...

Re: Unable to play Youtube videos

There is a flash plugin that should work better than the adobe one and available with the following command:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install pepperflashplugin-nonfree
It's the one I'm using daily with 100% satisfaction.

Re: replace windows to linux

First question would be, do you need all the space Win7 is using? If not, then I would just edit /etc/default/grub and I would add at the end of the file GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=true Then I would set GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 GRUB_TIMEOUT=0 Then it's time to tell grub you made some changes sudo update-gr...

Re: Retry at installation/newer computer

If you want to keep your Win7 then you should also keep the recovery partition. Usually I try to use the second hard drive (if any) to install Linux Mint (so I don't use LVM) or I go under windows and create a secondary partition out of the first one (reducing size of the first to create the second)...

From MY experience (which is not YOURS), ALMOST EACH TIME, I want to install an app, icon set, driver or else I've got some trouble ! Why should I lie about that ? From my experience which is based on over 1000 installations of Linux over the years I know I have seen a lot of reasons for an install...

After a little search I finally find out what was the command I used in the past:

Code: Select all

sysprep
I used it twice when I had to change the motherboards of some friends' computers.

What you consider a cons is actually what makes Linux stronger than windows. The Linux way helps you keep control of what your computer is doing. Sometimes you want to install a 32bits software on a 64bits OS. While on windows all the libs are already installed (which makes the os so heavy) Linux as...
