Re: why are distros never updated?

...along with everything else. The time factor, mainly - after I learned how to download the .ISO to my hard drive and install directly from there instead of USB or optical media, I saved enough time to more than make up for the time the computer then spends downloading and installing the initial up...

Re: Linux Mint 19.1 codenamed ‘Tessa’

Where are discussed xfce (or mate) changes? I found only changes that impact cinnamon... They'll be in the release notes when the beta iso's are formally announced which is imminent. Yes. The only (beta) version of Mint 19.1 out at present is the Cinnamon-flavored one. And even that took me by surp...

Re: Linux Mint hijacking Firefox home page

I can't see that Clem has anything to hide and have not seen any attempt at all to do such, this topic included. Yes, that was a poor choice of words on my part - and, upon thinking about it, gives pretty much the opposite impression of what the reality actually is. As you mentioned (and the link y...

Re: Lightning Tripping my Surge Protector

Another question I have is why it does that . Does lightning nearby actually cause a surge of electricity strong enough to damage a computer if no surge protection is provided? LOL. I live in a region that isn't known for regular, fierce thunderstorms. But we still get them now and then, like most ...

Re: [WARNING: TEST RIGS ONLY] How to upgrade today from 19 Tara to 19.1 Tessa

I'm sure this is a stupid question (in that I am guessing the answer is "No, obviously,") but: If someone does this thing, and then encounters major (to them) issues, would reverting be as simple as using the non-graphical boot screen, changing the update path back, and then running the update proce...

Re: why are distros never updated?

The only thing that... In ONE way, the OP's argument makes sense to me: User wishes to install distro. User downloads gigabytes of data in order to do so. Then, user installs distro - and downloads more data, much of which presumably overwrites(?) a portion of the data es just previously downloaded ...

Re: Much higher temps on 19.0 than 17.3 (78C!)

Are you also seeing higher CPU loads to accompany the higher CPU temperatures? If not, maybe it's some kind of fan-related issue. In other words, something along the lines of it not activating at the same temperature as previously, or running at a slower speed (at the same temperature) as the previo...

Re: Linux Mint hijacking Firefox home page

You are free to get your Firefox directly from Mozilla if you don't want to support your free Distro by using there branded version. ...and perhaps Mozilla will then supply the OP with a "free" OS/distro, too, lol? But in all seriousness, the term "free" in your statement does sort of imply exactly...

Re: Canonical says 18.04 will now be LTS for 10 yrs

The thought just occurred to me that this might turn out to be "vaporware" in the end, anyway. The man is hoping for an IPO next year - and, presumably, hoping for a high price and lots of buys. Therefore, of course he's making statements that are intended to make his property look/sound/read as app...

Re: Linux Mint 19.1 codenamed ‘Tessa’

I'm wondering if the 19.x versions of Mint will be supported for ten years, to match the ten year support window that Mark Shuttleworth recently announced for its base (Ubuntu 18.04). And, because I think I remember once reading a response here to a question about why the Mint versions were supporte...

Re: Window focus is utterly broken

Does Cinnamon require a fully-functional accelerated 3D graphics setup to run correctly (in all aspects)? I've never really been clear on this, but if so, I'd lean towards thinking the problem stemmed from the OP's graphics setup. Such things probably differ from computer to computer - and distro ve...

Re: Window focus is utterly broken

Did you verify the ISO before burning it? I mean, no, but what are the odds that 5 different ISOs across 2 different distributions and 2 years are all corrupt? Especially when you consider that several of them are the same ISOs I used fine on old laptops/Virtual Machines. I guess it's like asking w...

Re: My panel keeps disappearing.

Is it possible it keeps disappearing because you're in fullscreen mode? F11 should get you back to normal if that's the case. Fullscreen? Not to my knowledge. This is the first I have heard of this. What does it do (since I assume fullscreen is the default)? [EDIT] Okay, I see. If a window if full-...

Re: Linux Mint 19.1 codenamed ‘Tessa’

It's a question of getting the answer to your question, as opposed to getting an answer that you want to hear (read) . And that's fine as far as it goes, I suppose - because it is, to some extent, human nature, and we've probably all suffered some form of it at one time or another. As an extreme exa...

Re: IBM to buy Red Hat

As long as software is using a free software license, if somebody is charging money for it somebody else can offer the same software without charging for it. That's what Scientific Linux, CentOS and others do with RHEL software. Furthermore... If Steve writes software and releases it under some kin...

Re: The IBM purchase of Red hat

Hasn't Red Hat, like IBM, always been a for-profit company? Yes, Red Hat has contributed a LOT to our little open source world - but so has IBM: In 1999, IBM announced its support for the open source Linux operating system. Since that time IBM has invested considerable financial, technical, and mark...

Re: VOTE ! Mint-Y-LOGO... A New Version Of The Linux Mint Logo !

I do like the shade of green better, though. I do, too. Nonetheless, I agree with you in that I prefer the original. I am hesitant to use "advertising department" language, but the official logo just looks more... organic(?) to my eye. Maybe it reminds me of a leaf or something, I don't know ...

Re: Window focus is utterly broken

I can understand your frustration. But you must surely agree that any issue that neither you nor anyone else knows how to reproduce is going to be extremely problematic to diagnose. It'll also probably be difficult for the developer to decide to devote man-hours on if/when you appear to be the only ...
