Re: Has the btrfs vs the installer problem been fixed in LMD

1) BTRFS is known to be slower than ext4. It is not a miracle filesystem. Not on my rig. Large rsync file copy operations between drives which I've done a lot and know exactly how long took on ext4 took far less with btrfs. Could just be my setup working well with btrfs I guess 2) LMDE was never ad...

Has the btrfs vs the installer problem been fixed in LMDE?

Hi, I had to go through a lot of trouble to install LMDE with the following partitioning: ext2 /boot, btrfs / and btrfs /home. This was the same partitioning I used for Mint 10 on the same machine. It was pretty complicated to get it to work on LMDE and I would not like to have to repeat the process...

gstreamer Sound Preferences opens from the notification area

Hi, When I right click on the volume control icon in the notification area (where network, volume, battery etc. is controlled) and select "Sound Preferences" I get "gnome-volume-control.gstreamer" opened instead of "gnome-volume-control.pulse" as it used to be. Also, when I click on "Sound" in the C...

Rolling release and kernel updates.

Hi, I see that a few core updates like kernel and xorg are kept out if you leave level 4 and 5 update unchecked in the update manager. This is the default setting. I am wondering how that will work on a rolling release. At some point the kernel will be too old for the rest of the system since there'...

Will btrfs support be updated?

Hi,

On one of my laptops I've installed with two btrfs partitions since I'm curious and want to check this new file system out. I notice that there's some performance issues with btrfs so I was wondering if support for this file-system will be improved through updates for Mint 10?

Re: Anyone here use the Opera web browser?

I've used Opera as my main browser for years. I use it for e-mail. Usenet news, RSS and of course as a browser. With every new release there's a feature I end up not being able to live without. But every time I think: Why on earth would anyone need that? And then I find myself using it a couple of m...

No 64 bit. Chicken and egg.

Hi,

I do not really understand the rationale when it comes to 64 bit Mint Debian. I'll be sitting on the fence waiting for it, and since I won't install the 32 bit version I will not count as a user justifying offering it.

Scheduled disk checks won't run.

Hi, I have Mint 9 x64 on two of my laptops. One is an ASUS and the other Samsung. They are quite different hw wise. What's happening on both is that when the scheduled disk checks are supposed to run the hang on 0%, nothing happens. I have to hit "Esc" and boot happens as normal, but no check has be...

Security related kernel and libc updates.

Hi, I have noticed that kernel/libc updates always are marked lvl 5 and do not show in mintUpdate by default. A couple of days ago there were a couple of kernel updates coming in one day after the other. At least the first was an update based on a security hole which the update plugged. Will the Min...

Re: No logo when booting Mint 9

Alternatively, you can try fixing this from Mint. Select 'Control Centre - StartUp Manager' and try setting the resolution to 1024x768 and 'Color Depth' to 24 bits on the 'Boot Options' tab. Mine had got somehow set to 640x480 and 16 bit after installing the nVidia drivers. HTH This worked great. T...

No logo when booting Mint 9

Hi, I installed Mint 9 today on two laptops. Everything works except for one minimal issue on one of the laptops: There's no Mint logo over the progress dots. The dots themselves are also bigger than on the other laptop. Does anyone know why I have the logo and small dots on one laptop, and no logo ...

Brian49, Actually, you are correct. The tutorial recommends that you do not do a package upgrade because or past problems with package upgrades failing . Instead, clem details how to back up all data and installed apps using the new Mint Backup tool written by ikey and then do a fresh install over ...

Unreadable menus on certain applications like Skype 2.1

Hi,

On Skype 2.1 (and a few other programs) the menus when run under Mint 8 are dark gray on black background. It's almost unreadable. On Mint 7 the menus looks OK and on Ubuntu the menus are normal and readable following the desktop standard. Any ideas how to fix this in Mint 8?

Re: Not able to create tar.7z files with Fileroller

You state that you have p7zip installed, have you tried installing p7zip-full from Synaptic ? Thank you, yes, I have p7zip full installed. Without it I can't create password protected 7z files. I would prefer being able to create tar.7z files since I then will have file permissions preserved as wel...

I will report back here when I find out what's wrong. I suspect it may be hal, but I'm not enough of a Linux guru to really know.

Problem when ejecting a CD/DVD manually.

Hi, If I insert a CD/DVD, let's say it's labeled "Movies", it's mounted fine as "CD/DVD Drive: Movies" and opened in Nautilus. However, if I push the button on the CD/DVD drive to eject it it is ejected, but I get a second item in "Computer" in Nautilus called "Movies". I now have one called CD/DVD ...

No new tab is opened as I have it set to be I don't know much about Opera but could the open a new tab be the problem and open a new window would work? I have figured this one out: To get Opera 10.x to look integrated in the Mint 8 desktop you need to open it like this: 'opera -systemstyle' If the ...
