Re: My first year here...

Good to see that, Jim. :) I'm already a little more than 2 years here and I must say that this is the best place on the web for Linux talk and chatting in general. Before my Linux adventure I could never imagine that someday I will be able to chat with the creators of a whole OS ! Here I'm able and ...

All I can say is, I'm impressed! The charts are impressive! You really know how to present data in a very clear and easy to grasp way. I do not know what you do for a living but if I was looking for someone to analyze data you would be the guy I would hire! Your results are interesting too, there i...

Re: Vista download?

Fred, just to warn you about one thing: I tried Vista on my laptop before a few months and I was not very pleased with the hardware support. Drivers for Vista are rare for some reason but the OS is just fine and beautiful than 7. ;) In my case I was left without wireless support. Only my Ethernet ca...

Re: New discovery in Debian

I like gnome-commander best of all: sudo apt-get install gnome-commander If it won't pull too much extra load, you can expand the features of gnome-commander a bit with this package: sudo apt-get install libgnomevfs2-extra I just had a quick look at https://packages.debian.org/jessie/gnome-commande...

Re: New discovery in Debian

You should realize that the file managers you mentioned, are the core of their respective desktop environments..... Only a stand-alone file manager like gnome-commander, can be installed without a truckload of dependencies from another DE. Can you recommend me a few stand-alones like gnome-...

New discovery in Debian

I will call it " dependency train "! But it's not funny at all... I tried a few minimal installs of Debian with Openbox, Fluxbox and I3 WM just to discover that if I try to install program like PCManFM or Thunar, or Nemo for file management in the *boxes I must download about ~50% of the deskt...

Re: Vista download?

Okay, so of all the Windows I'd even care to experiment with, Vista is next to last ( 8 is last ;)), but anyway... I've got a valid Vista license key (came with a machine that I immediately wiped and installed Betsy on) , so is there a way to download Vista? I don't care to contact Microsoft or the...

Re: Expiration Date

Except Puppy and DSL you can try also TinyCore, antiX, CrunchBang++ and ArchBang just to name a few. For example I have a stone age PC from 2005 (last upgrade - 2007) which have 3 GB RAM, P4 2 GHz single core CPU, ATI Radeon X1200 integrated memory and 80 GB HDD. Guess what? I'm running Debian Jessi...

Re: What Linux Mint CAN'T do...

I agree with root. There are many other topics about how MS is a complete disaster while Linux is the best. I see no point in another thread about this. Dont get me wrong, I agree with your points and that's why I'm using Linux. It just seems that the same arguments are circulated over are over aga...

Re: What Linux Mint CAN'T do...

Just to be fair, Windows 7 can be set to notify you when new updates are available, leaving you free to choose when to actually download and install them. I don't know about the newer versions as I avoided 8 and 8.1 like the plague! ;) Or you can turn them off. ;) But the fact is: Windows Update ad...

Re: What Linux Distros do you currently use?

On my PC I use Debian Jessie 8.1 for now... I consider playing with Slackware at some point when it reaches 14.2 though.

On my laptop there can be only one Linux distro: Mint Cinnamon! 8)

Re: Brainwashing of a colleagues

Just wait a couple of weeks and see if they still bother with Linux. Many people just don't care once the honey moon is over. They'll go right back to what they were comfortable with before. Right, only the die-hards remain. My main target is complete - now they are knowing Linux better than before...

Brainwashing of a colleagues

Little by little for about 8 months I was talking about Linux in general at my university with 2 colleagues. The main theme was "Why Linux (Mint) is better than Windows?". For them I was like a geek or even nerd but little by little I though them the philosophy of GNU/Linux. Fine then, now it was a ...
