Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

Hi everyone, Reporting here a little off-thread, but it might interests some of you. As I was not able to get sound from the VM using Xen and various configuration (Xen 4.3, 4.4, xend and xl toolstack, different qemu versions), I moved to Archlinux in order to use what is described in this thread (...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

I'm intending to get a new ATI GPU. The 5870 is really showing its age these days. The 5870, however, I recall is quite a power hungry card. I know it's not an exact science, but if I used the existing 5870 for linux, and say, an R9 270/280 for Windows would that likely be a power issue? I'd rather ...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

Thanks for the detailed reply. That makes sense. I'm currently running a Radeon 5870 (and I have an old 8800gtx around here somewhere) in my system along with the i7 920 which I could keep along with the card I'm getting with the upgrade. How does that affect power usage? Not that it's a massive iss...

Re: HOW-TO make dual-boot obsolete using XEN VGA passthrough

I'm looking at upgrading my PC and looking for Vt-d compatible hardware so I can continue gaming without dual booting. However, how feasible is this if you only have one GPU? Is it worthwhile or is it a lot simpler/better with two GPUs? Presumably a single GPU solves the problem of needing multiple...

Re: kde4 icon configuration

By "Used desktop" do you mean virtual desktop? If so, right click the panel, click "Unlock widgets", click the semi-circle icon at the far right of the panel, the click "Add widget" and add the pager widget.

Re: My NTFS mounts aren't in fstab?

According to this: http://computervisionphdblog.wordpress.com/2012/10/04/mounting-ntfs-drives-with-execution-permissions-on-ubuntu/ mounting NTFS drives with execute permission is fairly trivial (I'm guessing *everything* on the drive become executable but since this is a PC and not a server, it's n...

Re: Linux Mint 16 KDE and nvidia - tearing

I doubt this will help tearing but try raster as the Qt graphics system, it's a *lot* faster than native. See http://userbase.kde.org/Desktop_Effects ... ics_System

My NTFS mounts aren't in fstab?

Where are the NTFS mounts stored? My /etc/fstab file looks like this: # /etc/fstab: static file system information. # # Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a # device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices # that works even if disks are added and rem...

Re: Linux Mint 16 KDE and nvidia - tearing

I don't know if the nVidia driver contains something similar but the ATI Control Center contains an option for "Tear free desktop" this option helped immensely for me.

Will replacing the motherboard break my install?

I'm looking at replacing my motherboard and processor: From: Intel i7 920 Asus P6T SE (X58 chipset) To: Intel i7-4770K And an Z87 board It's intel -> intel so it's not a major difference in CPU but what is the likelyhood of this replacement breaking my Linux Mint installation? I expect I'll have iss...

Re: I have/like Mint- but...WHY? What was the point??

I use linux because it does everything I need from my PC. I used to be a heavy gamer but these days mostly use my PC for work (Web development) and casual web browsing. For these needs Linux works faster and better than Windows. That said, I was mostly happy with Windows until they destroyed the int...

Re: Why not provide a version with all the desktop environme

I can see the reasoning but it still seems odd that there's no simple way to test each DE without downloading each of the ISOs especially as once you've made that choice you're essentially stuck with it unless you reinstall (Installing the other DEs on an existing installation via apt is not without...

Re: Upgrade to Liinux Mint 16

I've been using apt-get to upgrade between LM versions since 14 and other than an issue with display drivers between 14 and 15, it's not caused me any issues at all. From what I've seen, most broken installations can be fixed with a google search and a couple of shell commands, which to me is far le...

Just wanted to say this worked flawlessly form me (on LM16). The only difference I've noticed so far is that the time between logging in and having the desktop/taskbar functional has been drastically reduced :D

Why not provide a version with all the desktop environments?

Is there any reason you don't provide a version with all the desktop environments for those of us who want to try them out? I realise this would be a much larger download and require far more hard disk space but is there a technical reason you don't do this? As it stands, people have to decide which...

I'm having a few colour issue in GTK applications Mostly, they're fine, but there's a few colour issues (mainly background colour issues making text unreadable). I have a dark theme as this looks a million times better on GTK apps, it makes them look less ugly. I have not noticed this issue at all i...

Re: New KDE SC 4.10

I've just done this on a totally fresk Linux Mint 14 install. My "Add widgets" menu bar is completely blank, no buttons, or anything:

Any idea how I can fix this? Other than that, KDE 4.10 is beautiful.

Default file associations?

Hello, Is there an easy way to restore the default file associations that come with Mint? I have managed to set .deb files to open in Ark and I don't know what the default program was called that previously gave me a GUI installer. What is the program I'm looking for called? And is there a simple wa...
