Re: Fail - Upgrade from 18 to 18.3 - Help!

I moved ' ~/.local/share/cinnamon/applets/menu@cinnamon.org -----' to ' ~/.local/share/cinnamon/menu@cinnamon.org -----' and restarted Cinnamon. No change. No menu. VirtualBox_Mint18_06_10_2019_02_44_30.png I have a section of 'syslog' from earlier, but really, I don't know how to interpret it. Rega...

Re: Fail - Upgrade from 18 to 18.3 - Help!

... I really wish you'd just accept some advice occasionally and not consistently try and second guess. I really am trying to do as you say. I understand it completely. Fact 1 - back in May you copied the Cinnamon 3.0.7 menu applet from the system applet folder to your home applet older and made ch...

Re: Fail - Upgrade from 18 to 18.3 - Help!

My '/home/mark/' was preserved, including the ~/.local/share/cinnamon/applets/menu@cinnamon.org/'! AHA!...

I just renamed 'menu@cinnamon.org' to 'menu@cinnamon.org -----' and restarted Cinnamon.
No change. ARGH!

Re: Fail - Upgrade from 18 to 18.3 - Help!

I'm writing this in Mint18.3 VM. Still no menu, though the '/usr/share/cinnamon/applets/menu@cinnamon.org/applet.js' is the original. With no menu, From CWD='/media/mark/Palemoon Linux/', I had to run './palemoon --profile ./1oyhyp4u.default' in order to get to this forum. I modified a '.js' file. H...

HI Steve, have we met? This really is a week for deja-vu - https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=1688659#p1688659 Mark - remove your customised version 18 menu applet from ~/.local/share/cinnamon/applets From the terminal rm ~/.local/share/cinnamon/applets/menu@cinnamon.org I modified a '.js'...

Re: [SOLVED] Failed to start the X server -- I'm in deep do-do

Just goes to show that sometimes the user is not at fault. BTW, what does "off-piste" mean? Literally it's a skiing term referring to skiing away from designated ski runs, but can be used informally to mean taking any course of action that is non-conventional and potentially risky. In the context I...

Re: [SOLVED] Failed to start the X server -- I'm in deep do-do

In the Mint 18 Update Manager - Edit > Update Policy and then chose the third option 'Always Update Everything' Well, you know what? 'Update policy' didn't show up until the system was fixed. Look: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?p=1696040#p1696034 . Just goes to show that sometimes the ...

Re: Failed to start the X server -- I'm in deep do-do

Nope. Thank you, Steve. Thank you so much. You are welcome - the apt update followed by apt upgrade did the same job as manually changing the update policy in update manager to update everything. I would still recommend that you default to update everything via update manager ongoing though. Oh, I ...

Re: Failed to start the X server -- I'm in deep do-do

Nope. Well, I thought you were insisting that I update to specific versions of the kernel, of xorg, and of mesa. My bad. So far so good. Mint18 came up & rebooted & installed the GA & and now rebooting. + It's alive, doctor! + No More Transparency! YEAH! - The display is only 2560x1600 instead of 3...

Re: Failed to start the X server -- I'm in deep do-do

Shame you didn't actually follow my recommendations. No where did I suggest you go into Synaptic and force anything. Steve, Update Manager said I was up to date. It always said I was up to date. Whenever Update Manager prompted me to update, I always did. It did not show the updates you wanted me t...

Re: Uncontrollable transparancy with VBox's VMSVGA driver

In Synaptic now... Here we go again - off-piste - What does that mean? "off-piste"? Why didn't you just amend your Update Policy in Update manager and Update from there? Synaptic is not the right tool for updating your preinstalled software. No need to force anything. What Update Policy? Upd...

[SOLVED] Failed to start the X server -- I'm in deep do-do

SOLUTION: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=302984#p1696035 , and each of Smurphos's steps seem non-descructive, so they're safe to use even if you didn't force anything via Synaptic. Smurphos's steps restored Mint to full service like magic. His steps work no matter what. This is a ...

Re: Uncontrollable transparancy with VBox's VMSVGA driver

Re: Uncontrollable transparancy with VBox's VMSVGA driver

So I thought I had given you the advice on how to solve this in your previous thread on this issue, albeit you went off-piste and decided to upgrade your Mint version instead. Steve, you're a prince. I'm going to read the rest slowly and in great detail, but I want to respond to this -- I understan...

Yes--no symlinks. ~/ is not touched ...
In the article I linked to, the author doesn't use symlink. He auto-mounts an external drive at '/home' -- at least, that's what I think he does. I wanted to do that from the git-go, way back when, but was advised against it.
