Re: How to install again windows after linux mint from acer recovery partition

I'll try the first one using my product key later (need to find the box) & let you know how it goes, Thanks. No rush on this, post back with result whenever you get around to trying it. I'm just curious for possible future reference if someone here borks their Win7 install and doesn't have disks to...

Re: How to install again windows after linux mint from acer recovery partition

Appears OP is long gone, but posting this just out of curiosity to see if anyone has had success with either of the two links below. These were taken down from Digital River some time back, there may be other legal channels still in existance? I haven't found any, though. Unless I'm mistaken, it app...

Re: Writing bootable flash drives in UEFI

If you don't have access to a Windows computer to make USB with Rufus, then here's an option to try: Make a bootable Windows USB from Linux.
I've never done that myself, so can't say for sure it will work, but worth a shot.

Re: GRUB is overwrought

I don't know exactly what happened to cause your problem. I have never used Grub-Customizer myself, but have seen several posts here on the forums that sometimes it causes problems and/or changes expected behavior in certain situations. My best guess is that maybe an update to grub on install using ...

Re: Dual boot two linux os

Like I said before, I'm not familiar with LVM and have never used it myself. I looked at link provided by FreedomTruth and I get the impression from there that you'll need to delete the current swap partition before being able to reduce size of LVM2. I'm guessing (and hoping) that you can do that fr...

Re: GRUB is overwrought

Do whatever you need to do to boot into your first (preferred) installation. Then open a terminal there and issue this command to install grub to MBR of drive so it now takes over boot control from the second install. sudo grub-install /dev/sda Now run command to update grub sudo update-grub Reboot ...

Did a quick search on resizing LVM volumes. Found two articles that refer to installing and using a graphical program called " system-config-lvm ". https://askubuntu.com/questions/196125/how-can-i-resize-an-lvm-partition-i-e-physical-volume -- scroll down to answer #32 . Re: I can't load Mint 18.1

On HP machines, the boot device menu is F9. Spam that button as soon as you turn on your PC and you should be greeted with a list of storage devices you can boot from. Just find whatever resembles your disk drive and go from there. Try above first. If that doesn't work, I've got two older HP deskto...

Re: Dual boot two linux os

I assume to dual boot. I need to shrink the lvm2. But I can't seem to be allowed to or something. I'm not familiar with LVM, but if you are trying to shrink partitions on disk you can't do that while booted into the installed system. You need to do that from a live USB/DVD instead -- that way syste...

Re: dummy needs help to install another distro version on the HD- solved

Sorry, I'm not familiar with that one so can't offer specific instructions. Maybe someone else is familiar with their installer and can offer suggestions. Otherwise, go ahead and shrink Mint partition to make room, then start installer for other distro. If it wants you to make partitions yourself, d...

Re: dummy needs help to install another distro version on the HD

Assuming you still have USB/DVD you used to install Mint, boot computer with that first. Open GParted program from there and you'll see your hard drive partitions as they are setup now -- probably just a large "ext4" partition and a Swap partition. Right-click on the Swap partition, choose "swapoff"...

When floppies really were "floppy". :) And computers actually came with full manuals, for just about every part in it.

Re: Will this result in a non booting OS?

On PC#2, boot live USB/DVD, open a terminal. If you don't already know which partition on Mint HDD is the root partition, use either of these commands to look at partitions and find out what it's called (ie. /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, etc.): sudo blkid -c /dev/null sudo parted --list Now mount that root ...

Re: Will this result in a non booting OS?

Ok, installed mint 18 in a PC with 3 other drives, on its own drive, boots ok. Grub installed to another drive. If I understand correctly, Mint is installed to its own physical hard drive in PC#1, but the grub boot loader is installed on one of the other three. Correct? Now I pull mint drive and st...

I wasn't trying to express any distaste for you and apologize if that's how it came off. But, I definitely was trying to make sure you slowed down and read the links that were given to you by michael louwe . I'll try to explain (from my perspective) why I had assumed that you had only skimmed throug...

frogmonkey, You need to slow down and READ thoroughly the links provided on michael louwe's referenced post.
