Re: fresh down load of mint will not install on empty harddr

So where do I set up partitions? am I supposed to do it with Gparted before I install? If so that is what I tried after the first failure. It didn't work. During my installation there was a screen that stated 'something else' that's what I selected and could choose how to allocate my partitions. Ho...

Re: Very General WIFI Networking Question

OK now you've proven that my assumption that Linux Mint was causing the problem  Did you attempt to follow or understand I suggest booting to Win and insuring internet connectivity - then while in Win discover the DNS that is being used, or the method to detect DNS Reboot to Linux and insert t...

Re: fresh down load of mint will not install on empty harddr

In response to both responses: If The image I downloaded runs from the DVD would that not indicate I have the correct version? I'm pretty sure I downloaded the 32 bit version as I tend to avoid 64 bit stuff for other reasons. I will recheck later today when I can get back to the machine in question...

Re: Very General WIFI Networking Question

Can anyone help me as to why, and what all this network stuff means? Why is it stopping me from using public internet service in a public library? The New Your public Library system is more than likely NOT discriminating against Linux. Since the exact same hardware configuration works for you using...

Re: How to make Linux Mint 14/ 13 Cinnamon/ Mate look like W

I like the way you thinks outside of the box.

This is really a clever :) idea to use when introducing Linux to others who might have an initial 'don't want to see it' attitude.
If you currently have remastersys you can make a customized live dvd and show off!

Re: The Coming Computing Appliances

Consumer computing appliances with a Linux base have been making steady headway for quite some time - TiVo for one. I believe most DVRs today are Linux based.

15 years ago I installed a small business firewall the was an appliance - WatchGuard Firebox

Re: Do i need antivirus for Linux Mint

@catweazel Apologies for the emphasis of MY informed opinion. I spent 15 years as an Internet Security Specialist and found that education is paramount for security. I wasn't proposing that someone rush over to the sender and install the anti-virus de jour; but rather INFORMING them. Quoting my larg...

Re: Do I need a separate "standard" user account ?

Hi All, I am a longtime Window$ user and recently decided to move to Linux. I am just a bit confused about setting up different users. During installation, Mint asked me to setup only one user (who are you?). This is a bit different than some of the other distros that I have experimented with in th...

Re: Ubuntu Raring - a dog, not a ringtail!

I tested raring daily on 2 machines for a month an a half - was totally impressed with the speed and responsiveness compared to 12.10. I 'tried' an upgrade on my HP Tower and it was SO SLOW :( I finally aborted it, repartitioned and did a fresh install and customization in less time that the 'upgrad...

Re: 1st dummy question on general network settings

If you're connected to the Internet and everything appears to be working this could just be a startup quirk.
Do you have other network connections that you believe should be listed?

Re: Do i need antivirus for Linux Mint

This is a very often discussed topic, do we need an anti-virus tool or not. Basically i can say: YES and NO. First NO: 1 - Are we, as Linux users responsible for the security and safety of the systems of non-Linux users? No, we're not. Everybody who has a system running an operating system which is...

Sunrise / Sunset time is incorrect

This certainly isn't a major problem, just a minor annoyance. On my laptop I'm running LM 14, Cinnamon, with classic gnome desktop. added the weather applet to the panel time set the correct time zone time is set to use network time identified the correct location I'm obviously missing something sim...

Re: Libre office vs MS office 2010

Hi there, I am French and new with Linux, and already impressed. But the thing is, I need to use a text editor for my school thesis... I use MS office 2007 at work, 2010 on my laptop, and somtimes Libre. But when I want to write on Libre, everything is fine and when I transfer the file on MS office...

Re: Transfering emails when updating from 13 to 14

+1 catweazel Using Thunderbird and IMAP enables users not to 'move' email from one installation to another. For instance I have two computers using 5 OSes and I don't ever move my email because by using IMAP I simply point each OS installation of Thunderbird to my Gmail account and everything is ava...

Re: Remastersys owner is pissed off will stop development

This is what Remastersys owner, Fragadelic posted on the Ubuntu Forum. Fragadelic I will make final update packages with some recent fixes and provide them as a direct download from my website in the next few days. After that, Robert Dohnert's fork of remastersys should be used as I will be passing ...
