Welcome here. And if you need help, don't hesitate to drop your questions here. There is a really friendly/helpful crowd here, unlike on some other forums where you often get the RTFM reply unless you ask something really complicated and difficult. The motto of the newbie section even is All Gurus o...

Re: Mapen NAS niet zichtbaar in o.a. VLC

Re: Mapen NAS niet zichtbaar in o.a. VLC

Try one of the 14.04 Ubuntu flavours to see if those work, it is more recent.

I dual booted for some time.
At some point, I needed more disk space and threw off Windows.

Re: I regret

Welcome here, I made the switch when Vista came out. I dual booted with XP until I was up to speed with linux and then got rid of Windows alltogether. I still act a bit as the IT helpdesk of the family, but when I see what trouble they still have with windows, I am sure glad I am not using it anymore.

Re: How to access both internal IP and Public IP from public

Dont know if this still works, some years ago I tried having 2 IP adresses on the same ethernet interface eth2. It was on an old kubuntu distro, I don't know if it is still valid on new distro's In /etc/network/interfaces add (first make a backup of this file so you can put back the original file wh...

Re: Selecting installation partition

Garted is a typing error, It should be GParted. If you run mint from the live CD (so don't install it to your SSD yet) start gparted from there. gparted is a partition editor, you can use it to view or change partitions on a disk. you can use the application gparted to see an overview of what partit...

Re: what do you prefer in mint?

Before when I used Windows, there was hardly any real legal SW on my PC. Now while using linux, everything is perfectly legal (here in Europe at least I think, don't know if all media codecs are legally allowed in the US). On top of that, it is free, and you don't have to worry so much about all kin...

I wonder why 32 bit SW is still in use so much ?
Except for embedded devices or perhaps smartphones, PCs with a 32 bit CPU will be hard to find I think.

It came with Window$ 8 and you hate it? Upgrade to 8.1, 8.1 has been installed, same shit. I work with linux on the desktop for years, why would I want to switch to Windows ? My daughters Windows PC gets infested with malware and other thrash so much that a complete windows reinstall is needed abou...

What with warranty when replacing W$ by linux

I am wondering what happens to the warranty op a laptop or PC when you replace the pre-installed Windows OS by linux. I installed mint as dual boot on my work laptop, at work I use windows as required by the IT policies, and at home I use mint. I notice that when running linux, the temperature of th...

Re: secureboot in mint 17 ??

Thanks for the replies, it is clear now.

In the mean time I was able to check that W8 effectively boots normally with secure boot disabled on a friends new msi W8 laptop.
Also a Kubuntu 14.04 bootable USB stick boots without problems :D, I'll see what happens when mint 17 comes out.

Re: secureboot in mint 17 ??

Thanks for the link, I signed the petition. Technically I am still confused aibut the difference between UEFI and secureboot. My interpretation of this was that M$ requires other OSs like linux to include a microsoft issued certificate to be able to boot on PCs that are running W8. As mint seems to ...

secureboot in mint 17 ??

In the mint7 blog I read: Edit by Clem: No, it won’t support secureBoot This seems strange, as new PCs all come with the new UEFI secureboot thing which is mandatory to use W8, so I wonder what could be the reason for not supporting this feature ? Also I see that Ubuntu supports this, and since Mint...

Re: HD Partition question.

The resolution of the screenshot is too low to have a clear view. Here is how I did it with my Windows 7 partition: - in windows, defragment your C: drive - let windows do a check (chkdsk) on the drive to make sure there is no error on it that can disturb the partition change - make sure your PC is ...
