Re: videos overheating laptop in cinnamon but not in windows

When I use mint or Ubuntu, I also noticed that my laptop heats more than with Windows (not overheating though).
I measured power consumption and saw that linux uses about 10% more power than linux.
I guess Windows handles resources and manages power better than linux.

Re: HD Partition question.

I'd wipe XP also, certainly now that there will be no more security updates. On My work PC, I decreased my Windows 7 partition to make room for mint. I used the mint live usb stick to do this, using gparted, no need to have an additional gparted live cd, you can use gparted from mint. I used gparted...

help installing mint16 on an MSI GE60_2OC laptop

Hi, My daughter bought a new laptop and she does not like Windows 8 that is installed on it. She wants to dual boot Windows7 and mint 16 KDE. I tried to run mint via an usb stick, so I switched off uefi in the bios and booted from the stick. When I boot normally, the boot process halts and on the sc...

Re: key:Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery

I have a dual boot system.
When I hibernate my windows os and start linux, I get this message.
It looks like windows when hibernating prevents the windows partition to be mounted.
When I shutdown windows normally the partition is not blocked and linux boots normally.

Re: Why does Mint come with python 2 instead of 3?

IMO this is because a lot of applications are written in Python 2 and unfortunately Python 3 is not backwards compatible with Python 2.

Re: Mint Dials Home Even While Networking Disabled?

In my network manager, there is a setting called "automatically connect to this network when available" Perhaps that is the reason why your network goes on when some application wants to communicate with something on the internet. For example NTP (network time protocol) that gets the time from the i...

Re: Any Disadvantages to Using KDE?

Same here, I used KDE for years and I like it. I tried other GUIs but always go back to KDE. You can configure and tweak it as you like, but except for the background wallpaper and the start menu, I don't change alot. For me the Lancelot launcher is the One thing I would certainly install to replace...

Re: Hibernate can't be clicked, why??

I used these instructions to activate hibernation in mint 16 KDE
http://www.howtogeek.com/113923/how-to- ... ntu-12.04/

You also need a swap partition the same size or bigger than your RAM memory because that is where your memory
contents is saved during hibernation.

Re: Static IP addressing

I used to have a fixed IP adress also on my linux box. To avoid having to reconfiger it each time there is a new version, I let the setting to the standard DHCP request settings, and configured my router to always give the same IP adress to all my devices (based on the mac adress of the device) So t...

In the OP I see "In trying to import some bookmarks, other partitions are NOT shown under /mnt."

It seems to me that you need to mount the partitions first before you get access.

In this case /home is not ment to be accessible from windows, it is only used to store linux personal settings of the linux applications. The drive where the user can store data, documents, music, ... that needs to be common between windows and linux is his windows d: drive, which is accessible both...

Re: should I switch?

I changed from Kubuntu to Mint KDE because all kinds of codecs are already pre installed in Mint (it saves you the time to install them afterwards manually) Mint turns out to be very stable IMO, Also Mint looks a bit more polished than Ubuntu. I would prefer a roling release over the 6 months releas...

Re: How to do a common partition for both Mint and Windows.

Hi, When looking at your screenshot, it seems that all of your diskspace is already used by the windows partitions. So I would delete the new 204G partition and make your D drive bigger, for example 350G, in that way you will have about 50G left on you disk for linux. The D drive will be accessible ...
