Re: "Another application is using APT" - What in the world?

I think I figured it out. To clarify...I had not initiated any apt command whatso ever. I just booted up and after about a minute went to look for updates. But that's when I saw the "Another application is using APT" I believe now that it was update manager itself. After about 1.5 minutes I was able...

"Another application is using APT" - What in the world?

I booted up the laptop, and went to look for updates with update manager. LM 17.2 KDE and it would not refresh. It says at the bottom..."Another application is using APT" Should I be worried? How do I find what is using apt? I've not commanded anything to use APT. Could it be something nefarious?

Re: Hardware for Linux Mint build? Newbie here.

As for games...instead of wine, Install PlayonLinux. It is a frontend for wine and makes installing win games a BREEZE. I have gotten everysingle game I own and enjoy installed by either PlayonLinux or Steam on Linux.

Cheers

Re: Encrypt & Decrypt files

Would Kleopatra work on xfce? That is default installed on KDE and what I use. Works well. I use to encrypt / decrypt files and folders.

I hope it helped.

Cheers

Re: Check Download Image Doesn't Make Sence

I've downloaded and checked 5 different distros with no problems. I don't get it, but I did it. It was easy if you just follow the directions. I follow the instructions on the Mint page and it doesn't make sense. It says to DL the image, and the sha256sum.txt and the sha256sum.txt.gpg files into th...

Re: Keep myself hidden on a wifi Network?

I cannot test things here but if Samba appears to not be the answer, your Avahi daemon probably will be. I expect the KDE file-manager to be zeroconf enabled and Avahi to be what is announcing you to it -- such being its main purpose, sort of. Disabling Avahi might be an issue what with for example...

Re: Keep myself hidden on a wifi Network?

Again...I'm looking for a way to limit my "footprint" while on a foreign network. Meaning I don't want any other joe blow on that wifi network to click on his network folder and see my laptop. Does that make sense...or do I need to re-word what I am looking to do? I understand your "intent" however...

Re: Keep myself hidden on a wifi Network?

I understand that. Thx much. But what I am looking for is to get rid of that visibility that is so easily and readily available. Is that Samba that is broadcasting that visibility? Again...I'm looking for a way to limit my "footprint" while on a foreign network. Meaning I don't want any other joe bl...

Re: Fresh Installed 17.3 - Safe to revert to older kernel? Trying to fix wake from sleep

Was working quite a bit...so couldn't get to it til yesterday.

Fresh installed Mint 17,1 and Nvidia 304 updates and everything is working perfectly. I thought about just trying previous kernels (and I kind of wish I had) but fresh install worked.

Thx Rene

Re: [Solved?] Fresh Installed 17.3 - Safe to revert to older kernel?

Quite strange. I'd say, and certainly if the issue remains solved after you have shut down (i.e., not just suspend or hibernate) the system. Yup...after second reboot, it reared it's ugly head. So I just changed Lid Close to hibernate instead of sleep. Hibernate works perfect 100% of the time, so i...

Re: [Solved?] Fresh Installed 17.3 - Safe to revert to older kernel?

So booted into an old ubuntu 14.04 lts 64 bit live session. Sleep worked there. Then booted back to my 17.3 KDE 64 bit and tried again to sleep then wake it. And it works now. <shrug> No idea why. Strangest thing. I've tested it several times now.

Quite strange.

Re: Fresh Installed 17.3 - Safe to revert to older kernel?

Interesting. Hibernation working but suspend not is highly non-standard on Linux. I have not a single Nvidia card here so can't verify but I believe you have a choice of both the "regular" proprietary driver and an "updates" one? Using the latter did seem to fix similar issues on Ubuntu 14.04, the ...

Re: Fresh Installed 17.3 - Safe to revert to older kernel?

BIOS shouldn't really be an issue seeing as how an older kernel works. Are you in fact suspending, or are you hibernating? The things with respect to swap partition that you posted are relevant only for hibernation and frankly, if hibernation is the issue then I expect that I should throw in the to...

Re: Fresh Installed 17.3 - Safe to revert to older kernel?

I think it might be a bios update problem.

Hasn't been updated since 2009.

If that is the case....I can live without resume from suspend. :D She ain't that broke.

Re: Fresh Installed 17.3 - Safe to revert to older kernel?

Thx...I think you are correct. I just Live booted into 17.2 and it (using the open source driver), I get the same effect as when I try to wake from suspend under 17.3 opensource. I get a zig zaggy black and white pattern. I can see the mouse and it look normal and moves. But no desktop. ctl-alt-F1 d...
