Re: Asus: Fn for toggling trackpad

This is getting extremely annoying. I notice that the track pad is enabled at the login screen but can't be controlled using Fn+F9 key. It goes disabled probably 2 seconds into the login process, and thereafter stays disabled. It can't be toggled using the Fn+F9 key any more. Enabling the track pad ...

Asus: Fn for toggling trackpad

Hi, I just replaced Mint 17 on my Asus X55C laptop which previously had Mint 15. After installation I noticed that the one Fn key for toggling trackpad doesn't work. It used to work fine on Mint 15. Also it worked fine when I tested Mint 17 on live CD; but somehow stops to function after installatio...

Re: Creating bootable USB from ISO using dd

Everything works with the usual commands. Maybe I was missing the sync command before pulling the USB stick out.

Re: Install Mint 17 over UEFI(?)

Ah, so you were hinting at the key sequence to enter BIOS.

After having a GPT partition table and allocating one partition for EFI, I'm glad that I've Mint 17 booting on my laptop. Thanks for your help!

Re: Install Mint 17 over UEFI(?)

I was under the impression that you meant your currently installed Mint 15 had an ESP and only a root and swap partition. Your output shows that not to be the case. Instead, Mint 15 is installed in BIOS/Legacy mode and is using traditional MBR partitions Yes, it's Mint 15 and a non-EFI installation...

Re: Install Mint 17 over UEFI(?)

Do you still have the old Mint on the drive, or did you already install 17? I'm still running Mint 15; nursing my paranoia for Mint 17. If you still have old Mint on drive, boot into it and post back with a screenshot of HDD from GParted. Also, post back with the output of these commands: [ -d /sys...

Re: Install Mint 17 over UEFI(?)

... but I do want to have custom partitioning. From my experience, that's the part where woodoo happens. Do you have something specific in mind? What exactly are you looking to do? Nothing fancy. Just to keep $HOME in a different partition, and the rest in another one. It's precisely what bricked m...

Re: Install Mint 17 over UEFI(?)

Exclusively Linux, as had been the case for a long time! I know that if let the installer do partitioning by itself, it'll probably all go fine, but I do want to have custom partitioning. From my experience, that's the part where woodoo happens.

Re: Install Mint 17 over UEFI(?)

I've been using MATE and am probably going for that. I'll check the live version out but it's the installation that I'm worried about. If brick it again, I'd have no other device to connect to Internet to than my phone. Browsing for help via. phone isn't great, especially after having gone mad! Than...

[SOLVED] Install Mint 17 over UEFI(?)

I've been a Linux user for a decade, and I've been using Mint 15 for over a year on my Asus X55C laptop. Now that the release isn't supported any more, I thought I'd upgrade to Mint 17. And the recommendation method is do a clean install. I remember that before installing Mint 15, I had tried Ubuntu...

Re: Updates not working (Mint 15 Olivia), July 2014

So I guess the only option is to move to a later version of Mint then? Or are there any compatible mirror repositories available?

[SOLVED] Creating bootable USB from ISO using dd

I remember the old days where I could just use a single dd command to create a bootable USB drive from a Linux ISO image: dd if=/path/to/iso of=/path/to/usb/dev bs=1M I tried the the same thing the other day with Linux Mint 6 Cinnamon and found out that it wouldn't boot. And later I had to use the U...

ulatencyd in Linux Mint

I'm using Linux Mint 15. I heard about the ulatencyd daemon that could potentially reduce latency and increase responsiveness of Linux system. I'm aware that the kernel has to be compiled with certain options to use this daemon. Just wanted to check if Linux Mint is capable of this, if it's worth in...

Re: [SOLVED] Dropbox in LMDE/Mate

I haven't tried any other ways of getting Dropbox than what I've already, because it just worked for me. From what I recall (and I tried some time ago), when you run Dropbox for the first time, it downloads the full thing and only then you'd be able to start using it.

Power Button action

I run Mint Olivia 64-bit on Asus X55C laptop. The problem I face is this: I've set the power button press action as 'Ask Me' in the Power Manager Preferences -> General Tab. However, what happens when I press power button is that the system always shutdown without asking me. Sometimes I leave the sy...

Re: Brightness reset to max at every login

Looks like this was because the display brightness was set to 100% in the power management settings (under AC power tab). I stumbled on it while trying to adjust my display timeout. Set that to a minimum value, I get my display brightness settings I login. However the login screen still does have ma...
