Re: Windows Open when afk

Do you own a cat?
an error that read "error copying something.conf, no read/write permissions."
If you can get the name of the something that will probably help a bit.

Re: 18.1 disapearing desktop icons?

I am on an SSD and having the same problems. 17 was also on SSD. The icons on my secondary monitor never appear on boot. If I click on that desktop (so that it has focus) then hit F5 they come back. I'm assuming that that refreshes the desktop. Much easier than restarting Nemo. Mine will disappear p...

Share without Samba?

My basic understanding is that I need Samba running to share files with other computers running Windows. I have Samba up and running because, at one time, I had a pretty even split of Windows PCs and Linux PCs as well as some Android phones and tablets. Since that time, we are all pretty much primar...

Re: Nemo very slow to move files - More Problems

I'm glad to see that it's not just me. Well, not glad, really, but you see what I mean. I seem to remember this happening in LM16, then it stopped through the 17s, and now it's back. It's more than a little disheartening.

Re: Nemo very slow to move files - More Problems

The hang on moving files with Nemo still persists. I was moving 150 files and when it paused at the dialogue box I hit the Stop symbol. It took Nemo about 20 seconds to stop the operation. It had moved a few files at that point, but it left the remaining files in place. Any further ideas are appreci...

Re: Samba server not loading in Mint 18 MATE [SOLVED]

Just asking for a little clarification: If I'm reading all this correctly, if I have Samba installed my boot time will remain slow because it has to wait for NetworkManager-wait-online.service to do its thing. The only way around that is to remove Samba - which I absolutely cannot do unless there's ...

Re: Nemo very slow to move files - More Problems

(unless the slowdown is extreme) It is. Moving 120 files (by way of Drag and Drop, or right-click -> Move to...) into a different directory on the same partition can take as long as 45 seconds in Nemo. Doing the same with PCManFM or the mv command takes nearly no time. Nemo gets stuck on a dialogue...

Re: Nemo very slow to move files - More Problems

My sincerest apologies for not making the situation more clear. I should know better than to use HDD and partition interchangeably. Moving files on Home works as expected - nearly instantly. I might think that this is hard drive failure issue if things didn't work properly with mv and PCManFM. Just ...

Re: Nemo very slow to move files - More Problems

What gave the new user account ? Interesting: I get a "Permission Denied" error on not only these files, but every file on all of my partitions, except the two partitions that are NTFS and accessible in Windows (I dual-boot). I turned on the Owner column in Nemo and got the following: Home has "tes...

Re: Nemo very slow to move files - More Problems

Out of curiosity, what happens if you move files or a folder full of files from a command line with the mv command? The files go right away without an error or hesitation. I used the mv command to move roughly 2,000 files this morning and it only took a second or so. Also, PCmanFM still moves every...

Re: Nemo very slow to move files - More Problems

Thanks, Cosmo, but unfortunately this didn't help. The behavior is the same - it takes around 45 seconds to move 120 files totalling less than 100 megs. If I copy/paste it's nearly immediate. Why do you use aptitude? I wasn't really aware that I was. I'm assuming that aptitude is different from some...

Re: Getting Rid Of "Other Places" In Save Dialog?

That is a shame, those dudes are not interested in input or criticism. Again, I'm very much in agreement with you. I find it particularly vexing as the "Documents," "Videos," Pictures," etc. directories were deleted from my home folder a long time ago. I do not use them, nor do I care to have empty...

Re: Nemo very slow to move files - More Problems

I've developed a new problem, now. On each reboot my desktop icons realign themselves vertically to the left hand side of the screen. If I move them back where I want them then reboot, they go back to. Move them where I want them, then hit F5 and they go back to the left. Any time I open Nemo, every...

HP printer, maybe? That sounds like a Windows service to me.

Re: Nemo very slow to move files

It seems that the reboot has cured, however temporarily, the problem. I just moved some files around and they went right away. There is one possible explanation, which comes into my mind: Wrong ownership of files or folders. If files have to get copied, all needed permission is the right to read the...

Re: Nemo very slow to move files

Nemo got very wonky in the last few minutes. Wouldn't open any of the partitions on my PC, so I rebooted. Now all seems to works okay. I'll see if the problem persists.

Thanks again.

Re: Nemo very slow to move files

That's what I thought, too. And given that PCManFM does it instantaneously (as does ACDSee32, an old windows picture manager running under Wine) sort of makes it feel like a Nemo problem. I was selecting the files then dragging and dropping them into the folder. That folder is in the same directory ...

Nemo very slow to move files - More Problems

I was moving some .jpg files around on my HDD and found that Nemo was excruciatingly slow at doing it. It wouldn't hang but it would take a minute or so to move roughly 125 files from one directory to another on the same partition. I did this several times with several different files/directories. A...

Re: update firefox in mint 18

I can confirm: Updated to FF 48 through update manager. I am running LM 18 Cinnamon that I upgraded from LM 17.3. When I open preferences, I can click on the Search tab but the information inside does not change. In other words, if I click on Content I get "Notifications", "Pop-ups" etc. Then click ...
