Re: Mint 17.2 Cinnamon takes long to load

I'm wondering, too, where the longest load time is: before the login screen? After the login screen? Or split equally between the two?

Re: Mint 17.2 Cinnamon takes long to load

The only hardware problem I could think of would be drivers for the video card? ...except that the software centre takes a couple of seconds to load when I start it). I had occasion recently to remove the Nvidia drivers and this made no difference in the boot time. Software Center takes a couple of...

It's not the NVidia drivers. I had occasion recently to remove the drivers and the login takes just as long as before. I'm pretty sure that I encrypted /home when I installed, and I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it.

Re: Mint 17.2 Cinnamon takes long to load

I have something of the same problem - in fact, some of the suggestions and tips may have come from some of my original threads. However, I too, dual-boot Win 7 and LM 17.1 Cinnamon, and I have found that Windows takes about 10 seconds longer than Mint. I encrypted my home directory when I installed...

Re: Upgrading to 17.1

Never mind on the session problem. I changed the Login Window theme to something else and got is changed permanently to Cinnamon. Didn't help the original problem, but it's one less thing :D

Re: Upgrading to 17.1

Thanks again. Unfortunately, this didn't help. Both Software Sources and inxi -Fxz read as before. I did notice two things, though. The GRUB menu's first option (that I almost always boot into) reads, in part, "Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon." Second thing is when I am on the login screen, the s...

Re: Upgrading to 17.1

Thanks for the idea. It appears that I am running the latest. I get the following when I run "apt policy mint-info-cinnamon": mint-info-cinnamon: Installed: 2014.12.12 Candidate: 2014.12.12 Version table: *** 2014.12.12 0 700 http://packages.linuxmint.com/ rebecca/main amd64 Packages 100 /...

Re: Upgrading to 17.1

Thanks, but that's the one I have. It really does look, for the most part, like I am running Rebecca. I have the new Nemo, the wallpapers, the changes in the settings, etc, etc. It's just those two places (Sources, and inxi -Fxz) that show it as 17. Maybe when 17.2 comes out it will all change. Than...

Re: Upgrading to 17.1

Done. I ran update, upgrade, and dist-upgrade and got no results. /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list looks like this, now: deb http://packages.linuxmint.com qiana main upstream import deb http://extra.linuxmint.com qiana main deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu trusty main r...

Re: Question regarding partitioning

To throw another idea into the mix: For the distros that you are just playing around with would you feel comfortable using Virtual Box instead? I too frequently try out new and experimental distros and have found this to be easier and safer. It wouldn't share a home directory, but would certainly gi...

Re: Upgrading to 17.1

Thanks for the reply and link. That's exactly what I did on my regular PC. Update Manager -> Edit -> Upgrade to Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca. As I recall, it downloaded for a while, installed all sorts of things, then I rebooted and it was different. I even got the new wallpapers for Rebecca. If I recall...

Upgrading to 17.1 - and to 17.2 Still Fails

Back when Rebecca was released, I upgraded through the Update Manager and all seemed to go well. When Nemo 2.6 was released I wanted to try it so I enabled Romeo in the Sources Manager under System Settings. None of the new changes - Nemo included - would appear. I finally took a look at /etc/apt/so...

Re: Youtube Browser for SMPlayer?

Hi gael33, Have a look here as to why smtube no longer works. Have a look here for the authors solution. Hope this helps. :D Youtube changed their code (or API or something) and most of the stand-alone players/downloaders broke. Gene Benson's links are spot-on. I can confirm that the new SMTube wor...

Re: What would be a good Linux distro for my old laptop?

MX-14 has become my go-to for lower-end machines ... although I don't think that yours is particularly low-end. As most others have mentioned, find a distro that boots, where all you hardware works, and that runs fast enough, then customize it to your tastes. BTW, my old laptop's (running MX-14) spe...

Re: Where can I get bit torrent ?

Although it's not in the repositories, Tixati is my go-to torrent client. I've tried most of the others and keep coming back to this one. One of the main reasons is that I have set up several different categories that allow me to save the resultant files into different directories - one for music, o...

Re: Looking for a weather widget for Cinnamon

Here's an interesting alternative: https://github.com/onli/izulu Changes the wallpaper based on weather and time of day, and shows the forecast and current temp on the desktop. I used this for a while (just had to turn off the wallpaper slideshow) and it worked pretty well. You can replace the stock...

"The laptop has 512MB RAM, and the CPU is an Intel Pentium M 1500MHz " that's really for when win_xp had SP2 :( try an even more lightweight O/S: http://antix.mepis.org/index.php?title=Main_Page which has a similar aim to LXLE or - go with a lightweight DE like XFCE from team Mint.. I sec...

Re: What's a good partition size to install Mint on?

I have mine setup as follows: / 9.85G used 13.0G free (25G total) Home 5.74G used 44.6 free (50G total) I didn't go into this with a plan, really. The partitions were set up already and I just used them. My swap is 10G, which is overkill. But I reclaimed that useless recovery partition that Windows ...

If you're talking about Cinnamon, look in System Settings, then Window Tiling and Edge Flip. Check "Maximize, instead of tile, when dragging a window to the top edge."

Re: Memory Leak Mint 17.1 cinnamon

I'm seeing this, too, though maybe not quite on the level as some others. I power off my PC each night so perhaps I'm not giving it enough of a chance to get up there. On boot, Cinnamon takes only about 285 megs, but then it starts creeping up and can go as high as one gig by nights' end. I'm also s...
