[Solved] unable to boot (black screen)

I recently changed my hard drive, which re-arranged my startup drives to boot Windows first. I kept forgetting to re-arrange the hard drives in the BIOS screen, so I got into a lazy habit of pressing F12 during the BIOS post screen to select/boot my Mint SSD. So, today I finally decided to make an e...

Re: Setting up Mint as a media server?

I use Plex. All my media files are stored on my Mint desktop pc, which I can access on my Android devices. Best of all (in my case), is that it can transcode media files to Chromecast or Raspberry Pi (Rasplex).

Plex is also very simple to set up.

I will give Emby Server a try. :)

Re: Close Unresponsive Programs

I have been using Mint 17 cinnamon, and I had a few (but rare) situations where Mint becomes unresponsive for whatever reason. The mouse pointer moves, but I cannot click on any buttons. The keyboard also appears unresponsive, so I cannot use ALT F2 to launch xkill. What is the best approach for dea...

Re: Help with Mustek scanner

I don't know what Mustek model you are using, but I have a 1200 UB Plus Mustek scanner that appears to work fine with Mint 17.3, Kernel 3.19.0-32. To get the scanner working, I had to create a folder/directory called 'gt68xx' inside the '/usr/share/sane' folder/directory. Then I copied the 'PS1fw.us...

unable to read or write outside of disk hd0

Hi all, I ran into a strange problem today. I was using Mint 17.1 Cinnamon today. All was working well until for no reason Cinnamon disappeared. Firefox, and several nemo windows were still displayed on the screen, but the Cinnamon taskbar, desktop icons and the minimise/maximise and close buttons f...

Re: Why Linux? Why not Microsoft?

Because everything on Linux works. For example, I have an old SCSI card and scanner that does not work on Windows 7 x64, because the drivers are no longer supported. Yet, Linux has no issues with my old SCSI card and old scanner. Another reason why I prefer Linux, is because I prefer using an OS and...

Re: What was your Linux noob experience like?

Since the early/mid 2000s, I tried a couple of distros, such as Red Hat, Mandrake, Turbo Linux, and a couple of versions of Ubuntu when they were giving away CDs. But, I didn't last very long with Linux, because I managed to break them all and retreat back to Windows. I doubt I lasted more than a we...

Canon IP4000

I have never really had the need to use my Canon IP4000 until yesterday. I was able to print one document using the Canon IP4000 printer. However, if I try to print another document, the document remains stuck in the printer queue (processing), and it appears that there is no communication between t...

Re: Mplayer crashes when trying to playback any .mp4 file

I had the same problem, which is how I found this thread. SMPlayer used to work fine on my fresh Mint 17.1 install. But, then I installed the Ubuntu Restricted Extras, and this may have broken SMPlayer; SMPlayer would crash whenever I tried to open an mp4 file. VLC and Gnome player could play mp4 fi...

Problem was eventually solved by removing and reinstalling video card drivers. So, I am back using Mint now.

cinnamon fallback mode and mplayer issues, etc(?)

Everything was working fine, until I decided to do some housecleaning in the source list to get rid of duplicated entries and unwanted updates. Tsk Tsk... Anyway, at this point there was a warning messaged "Failed to fetch http://packages.linuxmint.com/dists/olivia/Release" appeared in the terminal ...

Re: What prompted your move to linux?

As someone who prefers using open source software, I was 'always' curious about Linux. I tried various distros in the past, but I always went back to Windows without learning how to use Linux properly. It wasn't until 2009 that I decided to set a challenge for myself to see if I could use Ubuntu for...

restore mint 15 mdm

I accidentally messed up the MDM when I installed the GPaste deamon for GPaste applet. So, now my login uses a two coloured screen instead of the Mint 15 default login screen. Is it possible for me to revert back to the default settings? Thanks.

PS: I am using cinnamon 64bit
