One advantage (if you see it that way and not everyone does) is that Debian is a truly rolling distro unlike Mint, that is, once installed there is no need to install a later version. Just apt-get to keep apps up to date.

I'll join the thread to mention that there is someone called vampirefo already making a gnome MEPIS http://www.mepislovers.org/forums/showthread.php?t=20361&highlight=gnome+MEPIS You could quite easily do the same with antiX (as has been done) or maybe even better by using the antiX-base version...
