Is multi-core compression/decompression going to be a thing?

Was wondering if anyone knew if Ubuntu 18.04 might have multi-threaded multi-core tar/zip/7z/rar/etc compression/decompression coming. I know programs are out there that do have it, so making those utilized by Archive Manager by default would be cool!

Re: Anyone else get flickering desktop backgrounds and windows periodically on NVIDIA cards in Cinnamon?

I guess that was a bot response? Either way it's spam and has nothing to do with windows rarely and randomly flickering black in Cinnamon. No, that's the read file for it from Package Manager. I doubt it would qualify then as "spam". Sorry if it offended you for some inexplicable reason. I'm pointi...

Re: Anyone else get flickering desktop backgrounds and windows periodically on NVIDIA cards in Cinnamon?

This is a known issue. Myself and another of the devs have seen this happen. The problem with trying to fix it is that it happens rarely and seemingly at random. I also have only seen this on my machine with the Nvidia driver and not my intel graphics machine. Thanks for the confirmation. That woul...

Anyone else get flickering desktop backgrounds and windows periodically on NVIDIA cards in Cinnamon?

Smells like a driver issue or some sort of problem with Muffin + NVIDIA drivers, but every now and then, very rarely, will I get the background turning black and/or flickering, and sometimes various windows will do this as well. It's very rare as I said, and moving the mouse will get it to go away. ...

Re: Flickering screen and distorted characters.

No clue if this was solved since this is an old thread, but getting rainbow colors or flashing and random characters is a sign of a bad graphics card. It may only start doing it at higher temps, such as after powered on for a while, and it may get more severe and start doing it more frequently, but ...

Q&A: How to play local flash/shockwave files in Firefox

I didn't see anyone else providing this answer after a forum search, so I'm creating this post in order to do so. By default, Firefox can play flash when it's remote, but not when it's a local file. Instead of playing it with the flash plugin that it has, it tries to have you download it instead whi...

Re: Screen tearing on Linux Mint 18

Linux Mint 17.1+ (I think it was) was perfect! No screen tearing whatsoever. Then along comes Mint 18 and suddenly tearing problems are back and crazier than ever! I can fix Firefox tearing with the about:config xrender setting change, but I've noticed that other apps such as Nemo will tear now and ...

Re: updatedb.mlocate runs daily. Why?

No. I also cannot remember having read a complain about the daily update or the database. No problem, maybe others will reply here. Hopefully it will be useful information for anyone who searches for it. For me it's particularly annoying as I have a massive amount of data, so it runs for a long tim...

Re: updatedb.mlocate runs daily. Why?

By the way, anyone else not wanting it indexing all the files on their computer every day and who doesn't use the "locate" command, or uses it rarely, can run the following to remove this:

Code: Select all

apt purge mlocate

Would have to do a poll or something, but Linux Mint is one of the most popular distros aimed at being the easiest Linux distro to use, so I'd be surprised if a majority used locate, wouldn't you? :)

Re: updatedb.mlocate runs daily. Why?

I doubt the majority of users use "locate" very often and if they do they probably know to run updatedb first. Nothing to say against your doubts, but this does not mean, that others do agree, does it? I'm stating what I believe is a fact, that the number of users who use "locate" are probably in t...

Re: updatedb.mlocate runs daily. Why?

Well the file search feature of Nemo certainly doesn't use it. Locate uses it, you're right about that, but I've never heard of updatedb being run daily just in case a user wants to run locate. Nemo does not use it, that is correct. But you have obviously never read the man page for updatedb ( man ...

Re: updatedb.mlocate runs daily. Why?

The terminal command locate uses this database, some GUI search tools do it also. Well the file search feature of Nemo certainly doesn't use it. Locate uses it, you're right about that, but I've never heard of updatedb being run daily just in case a user wants to run locate. Normally a user has to ...

updatedb.mlocate runs daily. Why?

Is it part of systemd? Why would it need to go through all a user's files in /home, though? I know Ubuntu does this but it indexes for Unity so that users can search for any file on their computer in the lens and it will show up there. Without such a feature in Mint, I'm not sure what good updatedb....

Re: File sharing SOLVED

When you try to share a folder, it's supposed to prompt you to install Samba for you automatically. It's supposed to be easy peasy. I'll start a new thread about that feature having been dropped unless someone else already has. That’s the way it works in Ubuntu but not Mint. This is what happens wh...

Re: File sharing SOLVED

Is this the error you get when trying to share a folder in Nemo: Nemo-Share.png It's because you don't have the samba server package(s) installed: sudo apt-get install samba --install-recommends That was the problem. samba was not installed. Thanks much for the help everyone. I see I have a lot to ...

Wiimote pairing in bluetooth manager on Linux Mint 18

The bluetooth manager shows my Wiimote when I hit buttons 1+2 and it scans for it, but when I click on the found "Nintendo RVL-CNT-01" wiimote, it shows another thinking circle and then says "not set up". I assume this means it hasn't yet been paired. I don't see any option to make it pair, though, ...

Re: Gufw Firewall doesn't fully work

Sure, thanks. The "Rules" section is blank and "incoming" and "outgoing" are both set to either "deny" or "reject", so I assume everything should be denied or rejected, yet utox still gets through. Other things such as HTTP and ping are blocked as they should be. Tried restarting the firewall, the p...
