Re: Linux Mint 18 boots to UEFI shell after installation, BIOS doesn't see any bootloader

uefi works fine for me. Where did you install grub to? The correct drive containing the necessary boot, swap, and root partitions via the manual partitioning tool. Either the manual partitioner failed to check I had everything correct that I needed on the drive (correctly-sized boot partition, etc)...

Re: Linux Mint 18 boots to UEFI shell after installation, BIOS doesn't see any bootloader

Is it a dual boot with windows? If it is then you should follow UEFI process given above. If there is only Mint on the computer. Legacy mode should be fine. This is the installatin process. http://www.linuxtechi.com/linux-mint-18-installation-guide-with-screenshots/ I don't use Windows. So this issu...

Re: Linux Mint 18 64-bit Cinnamon - installer hangs on codec checkbox screen until installer is restarted

Sorry all, I can't reproduce this issue in Virtualbox, and the installer USB stick I was using is inaccessible at the moment so I can't verify if the installation medium may have been bad. Still very odd that it would work correctly the second time, though. Since I can't do more testing for this iss...

Re: Cannot share folder (btfrs)

Yes, we need to have a similar "install sharing support?" dialogue that Ubuntu had way back when when a user goes to try to share a folder, or for samba to be installed by default. We're using DVD-sized installation ISOs now anyway, opensuse uses all 4GBs, and Mint only is using 1.7GBs or so. Plenty...

Re: scanner compatability

I was able to get my Cannon CanoScan LiDE 220 scanner with a PPA, and now hopefully shouldn't have this issue due to Linux Mint 18 being out! :D

Linux Mint 18 boots to UEFI shell after installation, BIOS doesn't see any bootloader

I have a Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7 motherboard and when trying to install Linux Mint 18 in UEFI mode I just end up at the UEFI shell. The BIOS can't see any bootloader or anything else to boot to other than the UEFI shell. I assume either my firmware is buggy, or whichever bootloader (grub2 or systemd-...

Linux Mint 18 64-bit Cinnamon - installer hangs on codec checkbox screen until installer is restarted

Anyone else having the problem where when you click continue after clicking (or not clicking) the checkbox to install the extra codecs (step 2 I think), the installer just hangs there forever? You have to quit it, then restart the installer, then everything works fine. I can see that the installer d...

Re: [solved] how to -truly- disable mouse acceleration?

Would be cool to simply have a switch in the options for disabling acceleration. Also, I'm not sure if it's an issue specific to 4K resolutions, but the mouse pointer speed slider seems to be way too low at least for my mouse. I think the general sentiment of most Linux users is that acceleration = ...

Re: Some quick suggestions for Linux Mint 18

The password is indeed needed for the backend of the GUI-package tools. If the password would be cached as you suggest it would mean, that an attacker could use this to (un)install anything from the distant. If an attacker has access to your user account, they can capture your key presses anyway If...

Re: Some quick suggestions for Linux Mint 18

The point is that Linux Mint should be user-friendly, and the desktop should be easy to use especially for new users. If the default experience is that sharing doesn't work unless they use the guest option or unless they perform several additional technical steps to fix it, then that's not a good ex...

Re: Some quick suggestions for Linux Mint 18

There is no other way. The only thing that comes closest to that scenario is the way Ubuntu does it and only if you choose to do it. Ubuntu doesn't install the Samba server by default but if you try to create a share in Nautilus it will install it and it will also ask you this question: smbpass.png...

Re: Some quick suggestions for Linux Mint 18

5. Is Mint's SAMBA "secure" file sharing broken by default? I've always had to use the "Guest access" option because I could never get sharing working without it. It seems broken by default although I'm sure there is some way to get it working with some tweaks, but it should work out-of-the-box. I'...

Re: Some quick suggestions for Linux Mint 18

Regarding passwords: The behavior that you suggest for the software manager was already there in the past, with the annoying result, that you had to enter the password for every single install / uninstall operation. I remember that, the current situation is an improvement, but not as good as Ubuntu...

Some quick suggestions for Linux Mint 18

1. Password prompt changes: a. Completely automated update option, requiring no password prompting or manual updating. b. Policykit or some such thing with a time-out to avoid having to enter password multiple times in rapid succession. (For example, you open Software Manager, then try to perform up...

Re: Easy way to install new scanner/sane drivers?

I use the xsane suggestion in Terminal. Not doing anymore. Tired of messing with something that use to work out of the box. When I do a fresh install of the latest XFCE, I will have to do these things all over again. I have an external HD for backups because I always do fresh installs. Hate using T...

Re: Easy way to install new scanner/sane drivers?

Tried out https://launchpad.net/~rolfbensch/+archive/ubuntu/sane-git and now my scanner is working great! Re: Easy way to install new scanner/sane drivers?

Thanks for the replay. Xsane is in the PC but still does not find the Canon scanner. Even 9if it did work, when I do a fresh install of Mint again, have to do that all over again. I keep an older laptop in the back room with the HP printer/scanner that does not print so I can still scan stuff. Anno...

Re: Easy way to install new scanner/sane drivers?

You can download the source code and compile it. Not the answer you were looking for, I'm sure. Were you addressing me? You already gave me the PPA link, that's all I need, but as I said it's other users on other distros that would benefit from a modular SANE driver model so anyone could download t...

Re: Easy way to install new scanner/sane drivers?

Cannot find Sane on my PC. sudo apt-get install sane You could also install xsane. Running xsane does a check for scanners. sudo apt-get install xsane xsane Anyway, if your scanner isn't detected by xsane after you install it, or by Simple Scan, you also probably need new SANE/drivers, so check on ...

Re: Easy way to install new scanner/sane drivers?

There's a PPA with a much newer SANE. Look here: https://launchpad.net/~rolfbensch/+archive/ubuntu/sane-git Thanks! I looked for a PPA but didn't find this. It'd be nice if there was a non-PPA option so that you can solve the issue for all Linux distros, downloading and installing SANE drivers dire...
