Re: Command Line Help, Please? [Fixed, All Better]

@Fraoch When I finally got it working by finally mounting the sdb5, Mate drive, duh. I had altered the /home/larry/MATE_16 path statement to just /home in the fstab trying to get it working without saying anything. I knew I was close. I had fixed the error that WharfRat caught, and the typo y...

Re: Command Line Help, Please? [Fixed, All Better]

@Fraoch and @WharfRat You guys caught me out. :) I'll go fix the errors. At least it is working . Almost too well. I have to unmount the MATE to get any control in the Xfce. Maybe when I get the errors fixed, it will be different. And, cool, I learned a new trick! Thanks again Fraoch, late...

Re: Command Line Help, Please? [WE DID IT!]

@Fraoch, It is a good thing that I am not there where you are, you would kick me. All I had to do was mount the MATE drive, sdb5. That did it. All fixed. All better. And, I wasn't lying, you are a great teacher.

Thank you from the bottom of my pea-pickin' heart.

Re: Command Line Help, Please?

@Fraoch, OK, here is the revised fstab. I still must have done it incorrectly, though. Same error. # /etc/fstab: static file system information. # # Use 'blkid' to print the universally unique identifier for a # device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name devices # that works ev...

Re: Command Line Help, Please?

Hi Fraoch, I do have an error found by sudo mount -a So I am posting my blkid and the gedit file. Maybe you can spot the error. I would appreciate it. :) larry@oldDell ~ $ sudo mount -a [sudo] password for larry: mount: special device UUID="a86d128e-c95a-4cbc-b543-e063935591c8 does not exist la...

Re: Command Line Help, Please?

@Fraoch Just one question. Do I make the folder on the Xfce , sda6 partition, right? That is the only thing I'm not clear on. At least I would think so, so I can point the new Calibre to the existing libraries that exist on the Mate drive/home, sdb5 partition. I got that from blkid, so it should be ...

Re: Command Line Help, Please?

@Fraoch, I'll bite if you would explain what that would do, and why I would want to do that. Please be gentle with the old man, newbie here. :D @Tejas_0 I made the link (right-click>link), planning to drag it to the other drive to the correct folder, in the GUI. That was I did in the original instal...

Command Line Help, Please? [Fixed, All Better]

I have a nice new Xfce 16 install, and I am moving in. :D I am trying to link, or somehow hook together my Calibre (two installs) Libraries across two physical drives. That will keep me from making a mess with the libraries. :D Question is: How do I write an absolute path across from my MATE 16 on s...

Re: Loading Linux Mint from USB and dual boot?

You might try boot-repair from SourceForge. http://sourceforge.net/directory/os:linux/freshness:recently-updated/?q=boot-repair Download the ISO and burn it to disk or USB. Boot from the disk (or USB) and let it do it's thing. Takes about five minutes. I assume you need the 32 bit since you were usi...

Re: How install WiFi drivers from USB stick. [Did It]

This is how I installed drivers for a Broadcom Wifi card from a USB stick. Rather moving the machine to where the router is, or dealing with cabling. Here it is a PITA. The first thing was to go to the excellent Ubuntu site that has a lot of Broadcom drivers. It will help you to figure out which dri...

Re: How to: install WiFi drivers from USB stick. Can you?

@BoscoBearbank
I tried your suggestion copying from a running install. No joy. I am going to try to download the drivers from Ubuntu, copy to the USB, and try to install them on my new Xfce. I can move the machine to get to a cable connection, but I really don't want to. It is a PITA. :x

Thanks BoscoBearbank for your reply. I will give that a try. I have the files copied to the stick, anyway.
We'll see what happens,

How to: install WiFi drivers from USB stick. [Did It]

Every time I install a different linux OS, I have to physically move my PC to where the router is, in order to get the wifi drivers downloaded, using a cable. It works, but I don't like to move the machine. I know you laptop people are laughing. Go ahead. I don't mind. I'm old enough that it runs of...

Re: I hosed my grub. any Ideas? [ SOLVED! ]

Hi gold_finger, Is it not a choice in listed in the grub menu? Or does it just not boot when selected? It is there, but it just flickers when I select it, and doesn't do anything. And, I'm not going to worry about it anyway. I'm kinda liking having the $MS chokehold off my neck. :D I think I'm going...

Re: I hosed my grub. any Ideas?

@gold_finger. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, from the bottom of my heart! That sweet little utility cured what ailed me for sure. Very short and sweet. A plus. Top shelf. After burning the ISO on Mom's Win 8, I went back to my machine, (well, after washing the 'doze off my hands) booted righ...

Re: I hosed my grub. any Ideas?

Thanks gold_finger for getting right back to me. I'll try the "Boot-Repair. I do have the disk for that. Once booted with your live DVD/USB, go to site listed below and follow instructions starting at "2nd option : install Boot-Repair in Ubuntu". That might a problem, since I have one...

I hosed my grub. any Ideas? [ SOLVED! ]

What I have is: A running LM 16-MATE, on my sdb, booted from sda where an Win XP MBR is. This is all is on an old Dell P4 machine w/2 gigs Ram. All worked well. At least until I tried to install 16 Xfce on the sda. And Xfce is installed, but now none of them now will boot. This post is from Mommy's ...

Re: Like to Quad boot, 3 Mints, 1 XP Any partition pointers?

@administrollaattori, Thanks for your reply. I hadn't realized that I could install other DEs that way. I had tried to install Cinnamon from the 'Software Manager', but that was not successful, so I dumped it. Your idea sounds like a good one. I dug through the old posts on this forum, but wasn't su...

Like to Quad boot, 3 Mints, 1 XP Any partition pointers?

Background: I am currently running LM 16, Mate. Dual booting from sda, 80 gig, which also has the XP install on it. What I would like to do, would be to partition sdb, 500 gig, wich has the running 16, mate on it. So that I could add 16 Cinnamon, and 16 Xfce. That way, I would be able to compare the...

Thanks, jungle_boy. I will do that. I'll find out if this old P4 will run Cinnamon decently or not.
