Re: no wifi with lenovo-mint 17.3-netgear wndr4300

Did you try installing proprietary drivers with the program built into Mint to do this? That might fix it, I had to do this on a Lenovo I have myself.

Re: Clone Desktop setup

I usually delete the .dmrc, and .xauthority while I am on the live desktop before install, and just set /home as your /home with no formatting. You end up with the same desktop on the first boot. I guess dependencies can be questionable. But if I want fresh, I take a screen shot of my desktop before...

but partition manager gave no other option than to format / so I just went for a fresh install, used my existing /home as is, and reinstalled my apps as needed. Re: If I change from Legacy to UEFI, will my clones still wo

That could be unaccepably complicated. UEFI installed OS's have to be "registered" with the NVRAM, and grub has to be installed to the ESP, not the MBR, and there are a few other hurtles that come to mind. The easier strategy might be to copy your cloned images to the partition where you want them,...

It might be 'valid' on an Oracle OS but not LM. :)
Good to know, look above for the output on crontab -e I did an edit.

Re: Personal Cron not surviving boot

After looking that this site, I checked my var/log/syslog and the very first line says: Jan 30 07:17:52 Inspiron-2016 anacron[31398]: Job `cron.daily' terminated Also if you read this part: Enable User Level Cron If the /etc/cron.allow file exists, then users must be listed in it in order to be allo...

Got this

Code: Select all

grep: /var/log/messages: No such file or directory
Test log was empty even after 3 minutes.

I will have to try making a new user and see how it goes?

Re: Personal Cron not surviving root

Tell us more about this cron. How is the editor being invoked and by whom? If you stuck all this env DISPLAY=:0 /usr/bin/luckybackup --silent --skip-critical /home/bob/.luckyBackup/profiles/Daily.profile > /home/bob/.luckyBackup/logs/Daily-LastCronLog.log 2>&1 in cron, it is likely not gonna work. ...

Re: Personal Cron not surviving boot

No other personal cron is surviving log out either.

This simple cron to start kate will run, but will not survive log out.

Code: Select all

/usr/bin/kate
Just noticed I made typo on the topic: "Personal Cron not surviving root", root should be boot.

Re: Personal Cron not surviving root

Thanks Habitual I tried it, but even a log out makes the cron job disappear.

Also when I tried run now with your edit, it ran but opened a bash window at the same time.

BTW, this script did work fine for several years in opensuse, and it does work fine until a reboot wipes it off of personal cron.

Personal Cron not surviving boot [solved]

I have a cron set to go off at 5 PM to do a backup with Lucky Backup. Programs creates the crontab, crons it, and it appears in my task scheduler and runs at 5 PM. Once I reboot, it is not longer in the tasks scheduler and does not run. I also check var/logs for any cron logs, and none exist. Any he...

chown -hR root /u Change the owner of /u and subfiles to "root".

For /home
sudo chown -hR username /home

put your name where username is.

Re: Where to install bootloader on UEFI

srs5694 Thanks for that great write up, I will give it a try. BTW, I can see the point in having no windoze at all, but every once in a while I need to boot vanilla windoze for USB specific hardware that will not work in Virtualbox, so I am going to have Win 7 for this purpose, and have Win 8 for wh...

Re: Linux Partitions to backup using PING

I use Clonezilla, will PING allow you to restore a backup of a larger partition to a smaller partition, as long as the actual data does not exceed the partition? That is something Clonezilla will not do, but ghost will so I heard?
