Re: Install without ISO

Can you try using a Mint with a different desktop manager? That is, any Mint that does not have Cinnamon. Mint MATE, Mint XFCE or Mint KDE. From the download page. Or the Mint Cinnamon 13 which is the long term support version (and receives the backports of the newest Cinnamon version from update ma...

Re: LibreOffice VS OpenOffice

I made the switch to LibreOffice when they appeared, because most devs switched sides (back then) and I wanted to use a office suite that had a future. The situation atm seems to be more or less the same. LibreOffice is still running strong with new features and stuff being added while they DON'T to...

Re: Google+ = junk

Are they brain dead? Why should I want to know how to pick locks? Is Google run by criminals who like to share their trade secrets? Knowing how to pick locks (even just reading a book) is useful if you want to buy quality locks that resist or are completely immune to those techniques. Because in ca...

Upgrade LGA775 mobos with much cheaper LGA771 Xeons

I was shopping around on Ebay for cheap crappy Pentium 4s to test out a bunch of old mobos (guinea pig job... risky) The seller with the right stuff for me also had a socket 775 mobo bundled with a socket 771 Xeon, guaranteed to be working and with their usual money-back guarantees. That's a reputab...

Re: Is Mint for someone that has NEVER used a computer?

I don't think anyone is "dumb" for choosing Windows over Linux. In many cases, I might even say it's a more suitable choice. What a misanthropic view. Reading comprehension failure. I said "even if you think it's dumb". "Dumb" was referred to the choice, an inanimate o...

I would boot off a mint 13 live-cd, transfer the stuff you want to save to another drive or partition, then nuke the system partition and reinstall.

Re: LM16 MATE & XFCE 64 bit installer crashes??

there was this irritating problem with erratic movement of the cursor that erases data while typing; doesn't seem to happen when I use a plug in keyboard to the laptop, but for general use away from home it isn't practical to plug in a keyboard. You tried decreasing the sensitivity bar from the tou...

But, it seems like the Clem advice is not for doing it that way, but, doing a clean install, I don't think I recall seeing this links data posted on the LM site?? this? http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/2 It's a bit outdated but most of the points are valid. Never followed it (I reinstal...

Re: Is Mint for someone that has NEVER used a computer?

Well, my aunt and her husband decided to use Windows, they didn't want to know anything about Linux. Shocking. An old woman who hasn't used a computer in years decides to stick with Windows instead of Lubuntu, Puppy, Debian, spinning cubes, compiling her own kernel, filing bug reports...[/i]...

Re: LM16 MATE & XFCE 64 bit installer crashes??

Perhaps the fact that DU couldn't "recognize" the file was the sign that there was corruption? That's a definite alarm bell. But in general, whatever software you download must be checked with MD5 or SHA or whatever other hashing system they provide, unless it is downloaded from their own...

Re: Is Mint for someone that has NEVER used a computer?

In my opinion systems that are further cut down, like Puppy, DSL, Bodhi and such, aren't as easy to use and require terminal for some tasks that can easily be done in GUI on Mint (such as mounting a CD, which works automatically on Mint but needs to be done in terminal on most super light distros)....

Re: Is Mint for someone that has NEVER used a computer?

Hello. I have a very old desktop computer (250 MB RAM, Pentium 4 2.6 GHz) with windows XP. I want to give it to an aunt that hasn't used a computer for several years, maybe since windows 98. She'll use it mostly for Internet browsing. What are your opinions or recommendations? Honestly, IMHO Androi...

Re: How to Install Monitor Touchscreen use linuxmint 16 mate

Try this tutorial https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touchscreen

Posting model of the netbook or the text output from the commands in the tutorial could be useful in case the above does not work.

If you post text from terminal, use the Code button in the forum reply to keep it tidy and readable

Re: LM16 MATE & XFCE 64 bit installer crashes??

If md5 numbers don't match, the file is corrupt, and stuff is missing in random places, causing random erratic behaviour. Delete the file and download again. If you have issues downloading stuff, I recommend to use Torrent, because it downloads the file in small pieces and usually auto-checks their ...

Re: No internet VB install

I assume you are trying to install VB in Mint. Not that it is so horribly different from doing that in Windows anyway. You go here https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads download the packages for Ubuntu 13.04 (Mint 15 is based that) and of the right architecture (32 or 64 bit, which in the names ...

OK, so I have chosen net the easiest Linux Mint? I would install a non-Debian Mint, much easier to work with. Without internet access I doubt you did much you will care about losing, and it's better long-term. Make a system partition and a data partition, especially if you don't choose a LTS (long ...

Smells like an IP issue.

You sure the two PC do not have the same static IP? Are the router's DHCP server (automatic IP assignment) options set correctly?
