Re: how do I change sudo timeout, and what to? and why?

Please note that I'm not a certified security expert, although I do have large experience in cleaning PCs of people from trashware and malware (mostly with windows, but the same reasoning applies to Linux). Also to a long post I answer with an even longer one lol. I suppose I could add programs to t...

Re: "shockwave flash has crashed" Iron & Chrome Browsers

Meh, if you want to harden the browser you need to lockdown javascript (not same thing as java). Flash is more of an annoyance (when every page you see is 2-3 mb due to Flash ads a slow connection chokes and a capped connection is wasted for nothing). Chrome and collegues have limited support for bl...

Re: "shockwave flash has crashed" Iron & Chrome Browsers

ah, the script in the package I said above works only for Chromium because it's hard-coded for Chromium.

For Iron Browser there is a guide here to do manually what is done by that script http://ag8.alltagsgrauen.info/tying-the ... rware-iron

Re: problema ORA CORRENTE

Re: Best way to download and use the latest WINE?

Meh, at least there is decent documentation available and most settings are plain text files. I'm still amazed at how much guesswork, boxes of tricks (closed-source executables that alter unknown things) and sheer luck are still major factors when you are fixing a Windows system. Doing some tests in...

Re: Running LMDE 201403 on 10 year old Sony Viao

Congrats!

I'd say to give a shot at XFCE user interface, as both interface and file manager are lighter and better suited for older and/or weaker hardware. Packages xfce4 and xfce4-goodies, then on reboot click on the gear icon in the login panel to try out XFCE.

Re: Best way to download and use the latest WINE?

Wine use has always been tricky (being a rather complex software done with limited knowledge of Windows workings it has to translate), stuff works in one version and then stops working for a couple versions and then works again. LibreOffice does have its bugs too, always updating to latest is not re...

Re: "shockwave flash has crashed" Iron & Chrome Browsers

On Chromium I always install the flash plugin used in Chrome (pepper), with package pepperflashplugin-nonfree (downloads Chrome, extracts the plugin, installs it in Chromium), and I can see videos on the mentioned sites just fine. as for the crashes, maybe it's hardware acceleration options. If they...

Re: End of support for Mint 16... What does it mean?

Security issues of OpenSSL occurred recently. That was issue for servers only (desktops don't handle those requests at all unless you are running a webserver on it, so vulnerable or not makes no difference for most end users). There is no reason to run Mint on servers (it is a desktop-oriented dist...

Re: Concern about Ubuntu aspects in Linux Mint

But it's the big company Canonical that is responsible for Linux becoming more mainstream...not that linux will ever be as big as windows...of course, i am sure you won't give them credit for that...you sound like the type that wants linux to remain a fringe, computer geeks os and not something the...

Re: End of support for Mint 16... What does it mean?

From a marketing perspective (I am an economist), having to upgrade every so many months/close to a year is not that desirable. You want your customers stable and happy. You missed the LTS releases. that's 5 years of support. ANyway, it's either that or breaking stuff at random intervals ala Window...

Re: Wireless adapter hunting

By the way, TP-Link never stated the chipset on their website, had to Bing for it. Heh, Windows users don't need to know these details, none gives a flying ... about linux users. So yeah, googling helps quite a bit. Also... BIng? Re: Question re LMDE from Info page

Yeah, but most of the people will simply choose the easiest car to drive. To the degree that that's true, reading "Using LMDE one will be more involved with Linux, dpkg and APT." will lead those so inclined to opt for a different release. Regards, Given the users it is intended for, bette...

Re: Wireless adapter hunting

I took a look at that ubuntu page, and then followed the links from there. sadly, it's of no help when they show card for the US and not the UK. However, I appreciate the info. You need to look at the wifi chip names in that list and then look at the specs of the devices you can buy, by looking at ...

Re: Question re LMDE from Info page

Then there is this: I believe that people who learn to drive a car with a stick shift transmission, rack and pinion steering, and a real instrument panel become better drivers than those who learn in a car with an automatic transmission and a poor instrument panel. Yeah, but most of the people will...

I personally used only atheros and never had issues.

For badass cards with more power/features/range, head over for Backtrack or Kali Linux forums and see what cards they like most.

Re: Asus UX302LA Zenbook doesn't recognize it's own screen?

Others were having issues with that HD4400 and kernels older than 3.12. Mint 16 has kernel 3.11. Since you have already found out how to boot with nomodeset, I would try updating kernel manually as explained here (just download 3 packages and install them, nothing hard) http://ubuntuhandbook.org/ind...

Re: I have/like Mint- but...WHY? What was the point??

Does not cost 150$ a pop for an OEM licence, its office software is not ransomware, it won't run out of support EVAR (LMDE version) and/or reinstalling it is NOT ANYWHERE NEAR the pain of reinstalling Windows so even reinstalling every 6-8 months isn't a major issue. There is decent documentation so...
