Re: LibreOffice VS OpenOffice

I use Kingsoft Office on Android, because it laughs at any other android office suite. (and LO is not available on Android) But I'm not exactly enthusiastic of using closed source software using yet another proprietary document format (WPS), especially one that exists mainly because of backing from ...

Re: Mint 15, Cinnamon crash, fallback mode, ati

Cinnamon requires 3D acceleration (and is also a bit picky because open source drivers don't fully support some cards in the way it needs). XFCE does not need 3D, so it sidesteps the issue alltogether. As for the double lockscreen issue I'd purge and reinstall the screen locker package. Or see if th...

Re: Installing LMDE from a non-live (already installed) syst

I asked about how to install LMDE to a drive connected to a PC running LMDE, not remaster an iso. UP8 is going to become outdated eventually and I was trying to find a better way to get around the fact that Clem doesn't release new iso so often. Some time ago I did try customizing Mint live-cds with...

Installing LMDE from a non-live (already installed) system

I was curious to know if it was possible to trigger the installer from inside an LMDE I have already installed in a PC so I can install the same stuff on another drive I can then move to another PC. So far I usually get away by imaging a partition and then changing the host name (and users/passwords...

Re: Questions about remote start and use of laptop.

heh, firmware bugs. Not a surprise, but it's indeed a bit meh. You can try by setting things with telnet (from your laptop). http://npr.me.uk/telnet.html On Ubuntu/Mint is the same after you installed telnet package http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2137672 as to what to actually do to set th...

Re: Questions about remote start and use of laptop.

But if the device is shut down it does not have an IP, only a MAC address (or physical address). Inaccurate for most routers today, they just show the same IP address to the same device as "inactive", they only free it up if they run low on allowed IP address range they can assign. It's n...

Re: Questions about remote start and use of laptop.

Great work, if you got that far you are way less noob than you think you are. Ok, I found a manual, is it for your router? http://downloads.thomson.net/telecom/documentation/TG787/R74X/SetupUserGuide/PDF/TG787_SetupUserGuide_en.pdf in chapter 4.5 it tells how to set it for the dynamic IP a...

Re: Questions about remote start and use of laptop.

Hi bobafett, Thanks so much for your reply. I'm sorry, I should have mentioned that I read that manual many times that you sent me and consequently I tried my Dynamic DNS address in that box (I also tried the address I found under wlan0 "inet addr" when I run ifconfig - don't know why I t...

Re: Questions about remote start and use of laptop.

the "pubblic address" is the name you gave to your dynamic DNS host. in this tutorial http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/connect-home-network-dyndns/ the address is awesomeoldme.homelinux.com It looks like a website address, not like an IP. DNS is domain name server, a server that receives the n...

Re: Disconnecting Wireless Issue and Rant

That's really sad approach. I know Linux distros are mostly about voluntary progress, I'm not talking about that here nor I'm ranting about something like "I paid for this so give me that" , but if you start a job, you should do your best. This approach will not make Linux world get bette...

Re: Disconnecting Wireless Issue and Rant

If you are trying to make things better, you should fix MAIN problems first! Adding tools or effects for display are not the Main thing, they are extras. Technically speaking, Mint is just that. It's just a different interface for an Ubuntu system (which is just a bunch of programs and stuff workin...

Re: LM16 MATE & XFCE 64 bit installer crashes??

I've been using the stock Transmission, which doesn't seem to have a "Force re-check" option . . . perhaps I'll have to install uTorrents and try that way? sorry for delay. Did some tests and Transmission has a command called "verify local data" that does the same as uTorrent's ...

I had already tried Google; it's a great resource but sometimes it delivers just too much info Heh, I know. You need to have a bit of understanding of what you are reading to select useful info, otherwise everything looks like black magic. For a newbie it's intimidating. :D I wonder if the distorti...

1)the "no amplification" range is what can be done by communicating volume increase to the hardware. When you go above, the sound is processed before going to hardware, to increase volume further. Can cause distortions on weaker speakers as you noticed. That's Pulseaudio doing its thing. 2...

Linux had ntfs support since waaay back. So yeah, must have fixed something, or just rescanned the partitions and rebuilt the etc/fstab for some other reason.

Why was that partition not seen anyway?

Re: Mint master/pre-installed Vista slave?

technically speaking, it's MS that decided to make OEM licenses (hardware-locked but cheaper) and retail (non-hardware-locked but more expensive) in the first place. Being cheaper all OEM use the former, locking Windows to the hardware (apart from germany where their courts ruled that it was bs and ...

Re: How come my netbook doesn't see my tablet?

Older Mint versions lack the MTP support. The packages you need to do it have been backported, follow instructions here to install them http://www.webupd8.org/2013/01/upgrade- ... rt-in.html

Mint 15 and newer don't need that and work with MTP fine.

Re: Mint master/pre-installed Vista slave?

Windows OEM license is linked to the hardware (motherboard usually). Afaik, Windows 7 disks can be moved around and will adapt to new hardware without bluescreening like XP and older. Vista should be able to do the same. The only issue here is the license. OEM licenses cost significantly less than r...
