Re: why mint mint 16 faster than 17

Try XFCE here for limited system requirements: http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=182

However, just looking at the download sizes- XFCE is 1.5GB and full 64bit Rebecca is 1.4GB! If any of the pros want to comment on this...?

Re: Using LM17 Cinnamon on Mac Air....Awesome....LM18 ?

Hey! I have Cinnamon running like a champ on my MacBook Air too! Did you keep the Mac partition? I split the partition but the only time I boot into OSX is to edit the EFI menu.

This is my first piece of Mac hardware, and I gotta say, it's pretty slick!

Re: Not able to use update manager?

You may want to try:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
I understand this updates your repository archive.

Re: What's The Difference- Running from /bin and compiling?

Okay- I guess that's my question. Is it considered 'safer', 'smarter' to add the repository? Or, build from the source? Or are these just different ways to achieve the same thing? Sorry for my confusion. Also, to clarify. I was happy selecting the appropriate /bin file to execute my app but realized...

Re: What's The Difference- Running from /bin and compiling?

Thanks for your reply.

What does a seasoned Linux pro do when it comes to /bins and actually compiling from source?

I was happy selecting the appropriate /bin file to execute my app but realized I was going to need some added features only available from the terminal.

Thanks!

What's The Difference- Running from /bin and compiling?

I've downloaded a package that contains /src and /bin

I can go into the /bin folder and execute the appropriate file.

And/Or

I can go into /src and ./configure - make - make install

What is the difference?

Thanks!

Re: Wi-fi not working

This is how I get my third party wifi drivers to function. After a fresh Mint installation from my boot media (USB stick) I leave the USB stick in the drive and select Driver Manager from the Administration menu. This will list the proprietary drivers required to get your system running. Most of the...

Re: Removing Realtek wifi driver and installing a new one.

I also have the realtek ALFA wifi and have not been succesful installing the most recent driver. The instructions call for 'make install' - except it fails. Here are the instructions included with the driver: 1. Build up the drivers from the source code make 2. Install the driver to the kernel make ...

Re: Setting up a VPN?

I have yet to find a 'free' VPN provider for Linux users.

Point me in the right direction...

I already pay for my connection at home and want to use it even when I'm away.

Re: Problems trying to run CGMINER(bitcoin miner), Cinnamon

Hi.

I'm trying to configure cgminer on my Cinammon machine. I'm getting the following error after ./configure:

Code: Select all

All devices disabled, cannot mine!
How do I get it to enable my GPU for mining purposes?

Thanks!

Re: Magnet Links Don't Seem to Work on Linux Mint 16!

Why don't you just copy the magnet link and add the url to your transmission queue that way?

I assume you found transmission usr/bin?

rEFInd and Macbook Air

FYI: This is probably the case with all Mac installations: I just updated my OSX installation and it wiped rEFInd. No problem. I had to rerun the rEFInd install.sh via the terminal on the MAC. Good luck.

Re: Installing Mint on a Macbook Air 2013

Anyone figure the webcam solution out?

Also, I installed rEFInd. Everything works fine during boot-up except: When reaching the grub menu, if I press [enter] before the countdown reaches zero the machine will freeze on a dark screen before reaching the LM splash window. Any ideas?

Re: Linux Mint on a MacBook Air

This machine will only boot if I wait for the grub menu to count down to zero. If i press [enter] at any time during the grub menu countdown the screen goes dark- the LM spash screen never appears and it hangs.

strange.
