Re: Virtualbox version 5

Thanks for all the replies. Normally the forum emails me of replies. In the absence of notification I was under the impression this question was being ignored. OK, to all those who say the repos do offer 64 bit. I was under the impression any file with an x86 designation means its for 32 bit hardwar...

Virtualbox version 5

Hello, I having a hard time deciding whether to use Virtualbox 5 available on the repositories or the 5.2.6 available on the Oracle website. I am intending to emulate Windows 7 running some specialized diagnostics software. The one available on the repositories is x86 and my machine is 64. So I pref...

Missing menu in ciinimon mint 18.1

Hi, I had to clean up my drive and get rid of HP printer files. I decided I wipe everything and reinstall. I am using 64 bit distribution. I had to solve the usual Nvidia 280 GTX problem by editing grup from quiet splash to nomodset. That way I was able to get into the generic desktop and install th...

Re: HP come up trumps for Linux Printing

I was going to write heaps of praise for the hitherto very impressive experience with Linux 18.1. For example I cannot believe how well wine is working with two little known windows executables. Well done to the developers. Having said that, half way through a print job my printer ran out of paper a...

Kernel update

Can any of the senior techies here advise on the following my update manager is suggesting I should install. Kernel 4.4.0.62.83 Firmware 1.157.8 I do want to maintain my stability. But then if the new kernel is best suited for SSD, I might consider it. I am currently using Mint 18.1. Thanks Siawacsh

It is strange there are plenty of tutorials on how to disable this feature. But nothing for enabling it..

Mint 18 startup menu

Hi, can anyone tell me what has happened to "recent files" I used to see in earlier versions of the menu bar.? I am using Mint 18.1.

I checked the applets configure options but could not see any way to enable it.

I really miss that feature.

Re: HP Laserjet 1018 SOLVED

Just to let everybody, particularly pjtor know that I managed to finally install Mint Cinamon 18.1. I discovered the tutorial nomodeset tutorial under release notes. Fairly convoluted but nevertheless I managed. Well done to me! https://linuxmint.com/rel_sarah_cinnamon.php And true to form pjtor was...

Re: HP Laserjet 1018

Pjtor, just letting you know I tried Peppermint 7. It looks like Ubuntu 16.04 has not improved the nvidia situation. When I boot into the installation DVD I get a menu to try it out, install, memory test, boot from hdd. The first two options go into a progress bar which eventually end in a black scr...

Re: HP Laserjet 1018

Hi Ajgreeny, yes if you look at my first post I use simplescreenrecorder to record what steps I have taken. There are two recordings. One is called installation and the other diagnostics. The first is 13 minutes long and the second only two minutes. The plugin was definitely part of the process. Tha...

Re: HP Laserjet 1018

Thanks Jimallyn, I cannot explain away my printer problems. All I can say is that I have had problems with Mint 17. And prior to that I was using a Samsung ML-1675 which was rock solid on all distros. Unfortunately I had to donate that to a family member. I miss it so much. It was due to this proble...
