Re: Mate versus Cinnamon

You can install MATE first and then install Cinnamon over the top quite nicely (and set CInnamon to use MATE programs).

If you install Mint Cinnamon and then install MATE, you end up with duplicated programs.

Not a bug. Default Ubuntu (hence all Ubuntu derivatives) installations install most of the Open Source drivers for most of the major hardware manufacturers in order for the "out-of-the-box" installation to work.

Re: be able to insert a disk and run it like on windows!

You can insert a disk and run it like on Linux, isn't that good enough??!!! Unlike Windows you can just insert a disk and run Linux :D I've seen a nice signature under someone's posts linking to a piece telling why Linux is not Windows. There where it's different one should look at the reasons!! Th...

Have you tried (note the spacing):

Code: Select all

sudo shutdown -h now
This has never failed me since I discovered the command in 2007, regardless of distribution.

Re: Which version to install for stability?

I would personally wait for Mint 17 to come out.

Which version? Probably MATE, mainly because the multitude of Cinnamon versions can cause problems.

Re: UPDATE GRAPHIC CARD DRIVERS LM 13 MAYA MATE 32 BITS

If it's the series of cards I think it (Graphics Media Accelerators), you might actually cause more trouble by updating to the latest drivers, because of the preferred acceleration method for the Intel driver changed in 2013, which can cause disagreements with older cards. If you insist on using upd...

Have you tried removing the nouveau drivers as well?

Re: Install Nvidia Drivers on Optimus System

If you are not disabling the on-board graphics card (typically the Intel one) AND you want to use the nVidia drivers, then you must use BumbleBee. That's not really true anymore. That's the beauty of nvidia-prime. I can have both the intel drive and Nvidia drivers installed. Then Nvidia-prime allow...

You should be able to install Mint 17 and configure a UEFI bootloader to work with it so you can boot with UEFI.

Re: why not just one forum="Desktops & Window Managers" ?

Aren't questions that are actually about desktops and window managers going to be edition-independent? No, LMDE gets it's updates in the UPDATE packs, where the main edition of Mint can pulls things in from Ubuntu and the repositories, making them sufficiently different to warrant that kind of dist...

I can't seem to wrap my head around why on earth it would do this... I go into the Software Manager and try to remove kmail because I don't use it. Re: Should I continue to dual-boot?

Unless you are really short of hard disk space, my personal opinion is that there is at least a small advantage to dual booting. If by small chance something disastrous happened to your Mint installation, you would at least have another OS to temporarily fall back to until you got Mint reinstalled ...

Huh . . . it IS running. Thanks ClutchDisc. Opening the GUI and looking at the "Status" switch - it is ALWAYS showing the Status Switch as OFF ! Please excuse me if I'm being dumb, but isn't Windows system restore just a configuration back up?. That's what I thought. Yes, Windows has other facilities, but you have to set those up. There are many ways to do a backup. Off-hand, the ones I can think of are: cron rsync lvm btrfs There are more....

I would have thought that the security risk in Online Banking would have been in the Browser/Encryption/Security end of the system, not in the OS? This. People are more likely to steal your bank details through browser vulnerabilities, badly implemented encryption than they are through kernel vulne...
