Re: Concern about Ubuntu aspects in Linux Mint

So my question to you is: Are there parts of Ubuntu in Linux Mint that secretly shows, send private Information of my PC to anyone (maybe because of parts of Ubuntu)? As previously mentioned, that is specific to the Unity Desktop, so if you don't install the Unity Desktop, you won't have this probl...

Client-Side Decorations... I hate them. Hence why I use the MATE packages with Cinnamon, over the GNOME3 packages.

Re: Cinnamon 2.2 is awesome!

Wish I could say it's awesome, but in my arch install, Cinnamon 2.2 boots into a grey screen and I cannot do anything but move the mousepointer around. Huh, that's quite strange. It seems that I've got it working quite well on mine (ignoring the upower 0.99 issue). Please keep in mind, that it's pr...

Re: what catalyst version is recommended for LM16?

Use the one in your Driver Manager. Lookie here I have an R7 250. Had lots of troubles with Catalyst 13.9 beta under Fedora 19, so I decided to upgrade to Fedora 20 and found even more problems, so it is time to go back to Mint. With that card, I'd be looking at installing AMD Catalyst for Linux fr...

Have you looked in the Screensaver settings? In the Screensaver settings, uncheck "Lock Screen when Screensaver in Active".

Re: what catalyst version is recommended for LM16?

The better question is: What AMD Card are you using?

If it's a X1xxx or HD234k series, don't bother.

If it''s the 5k or 6k, then the fglrx from Additional Drivers should do it.

Anything more recent? I'd use Xedgers.

Re: Linux mint support ends

Is it not more work to release a whole new version, than maintaining a rolling release distro? I use ArchLinux as well as Linux Mint, and it's quite a bit more work for maintainers to watch over a (truly) rolling release distribution than basing your releases off the Ubuntu development cycle. Let's...

Re: Installing Cinnamon, Mate, and Xfce concurrently

A couple of items in the Cinnamon menu don't run. For example, the Terminal menu option. The resolution is install gnome-terminal and then update the menu for duplication. You can set these to use the MATE equivalents using the menu editor and dconf-editor, completely removing the need to install t...

thanks. i like your reply Haha, I'm studying a degree in Mathematical Cryptography. Perspective is everything. the thing i was mulling over is simply this: i think the fuss over "heartbleed" is beeing over-hyped a bit -- perhaps because it is an Open Source object [snip] so as far as the whole poin...

Re: Need help installing AMD catalyst drivers.

It's working, but is the version of fglrx supposed to be 2:13.101? That is what is displayed in driver manager. The Ubuntu developers did some weird numbering, so yes. Why they couldn't just use 13.1, to correspond with AMD Catalyst versions is beyond me... EDIT: It corresponds to driver version 13...

Re: "Heartbleed" and SQL/Injection: Perspective

I think the reason that Heartbleed was so big because you could (as gracefully demonstrated by Cloudflare) have actual longterm OpenSSL keys stolen, which in the eyes of some is a massive security failing. But yes, putting things into perspective, things like SQL injections are more serious because ...

Re: New Install Can Only Use nomodeset ATI - SOLVED!

I know it's all my fault for having such rare and unusual hardware. I mean who's ever heard of Radeon HD 7950's. Not to mention nVidia, whoever they are. The Xedgers repository solves both of these. The Soundblaster card is a bit of a problem though, even in ArchLinux (but not impossible to deal wi...

I want to know if now the laptop is using the AMD/ATI card and not the intel one. Also should it now be safe to install the fglrx drivers.
