Re: Would you like LMDE to be based on Stable, not on Testin

It's only a consequence, not a propriety. This consequence of not having to reinstall to a lot of people is the most important property of rolling releases. Debian Stable is not a rolling releases, but you don't have to reinstall it. You can upgrade between version. But it's not a rolling release. ...

Re: Would you like LMDE to be based on Stable, not on Testin

lol, anyway, rolling has become a blanket-term for not having to re-install. No this is just for you. Wrong, it is not just for him. Rolling releases are generally considered to have "no need to reinstall the operating system, as is (usually) the case with upgrading between versions of a standard r...

Re: Would you like LMDE to be based on Stable, not on Testin

the move to stable would give the dev's a little more time to polish LMDE. There would hardly be anything left to polish, that's what so intriguing to the developers. It's not like now where LMDE with each UP is a comparatively current snapshot of Debian Testing, which has to be tested by Mint, bec...

Re: Would you like LMDE to be based on Stable, not on Testin

Mint which doesn't have such a direct focus on who/where it is used In my opinion LMDE has lost steam for lack of time and focus. The maintainers seem to have lost interest and are now looking for the easy way out to concentrate on other things. To base LMDE on Debian stable and stop it from rollin...

Re: Would you like LMDE to be based on Stable, not on Testin

No it's not, because XFCE and KDE are different from Cinnamon. Different DE, different problems, different distro, different solutions. Period. Why don't you compare LMDE and #! ? LMDE and SolydXK are both semi-rolling releases based on Debian Testing with a common past, so they are the obvious cho...

Everyone who doesn't can get some information here . So, yes, in this context it's perfectly feasible to compare SolydXK to LMD...

Not necessarily, some packages take a long time from sid to stable. And even if they finally got to stable Jessie (or LMDE stable) would only be ahead of Mint 17 but neither ahead nor on par with Ubuntu 15.04 or SolydXK.

Re: Would you like LMDE to be based on Stable, not on Testin

Canonical takes packages from Debian unstable and tweaks them That's strange. Normally you read that Ubuntu is based on Debian Testing, but it seems that this was only for some time, and only for LTS-versions. You are right, now even LTS is based on unstable: "Starting with the 14.04 LTS developmen...

Re: Would you like LMDE to be based on Stable, not on Testin

I thought about this a lot since the topic came up (more than would have been necessary because I could live with both options or another distro as well) and come to the result (in my opinion) that it doesn't make sense to base LMDE on Debian Stable. Why did people choose LMDE instead of Mint XX? Th...

Re: Software Manager will not open..

At least you now have reinstalled mintinstall and it can be supposed that mintinstall is not the problem.
Having read a bit about Startup Manager I suppose the program did (with or without your help) bork something regarding password usage.

Maybe if instead of writing loads of irrelevant things you would give specific information about your system, about what you did and where your problem is someone could give you an answer.

Re: Software Manager will not open..

1. Try sudo apt-get --reinstall install mintinstall to reinstall mintinstall. This will reinstall the package from repos. 2. Yes, there can be two passwords in LMDE. Normally only the user password is used and (provided this user is member of group sudo) allows acting as root. But you can have a sep...

Re: How to read/mount disks in LMDE

I don't know whether your windows data drive is an external or internal drive. External should be mounted automatically when plugged. Internal will be mounted automatically if mentioned correctly in /etc/fstab. For mounting every now and then you can use gnome-disk-utility (using MATE; Cinnamon has ...

Re: Scribus 1.5 svn installation - freetype error

If you are brave and have an uptodate backup you could try the deb-files from Ubuntu's ppa at https://launchpad.net/~scribus/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+packages Click the arrow before scribus-trunk-.... and you can directly download the 1.5.0svn for 14.04 (which should be more similar to LMDE than 14.10 :...

To 1. - ${FREETYPE_INCLUDE_DIR} is part of the original script and I have simply added /usr/include/freetype2 as my part. I do not think, that I should change to ...INCLUDE_DIR S . Re: How to read/mount disks in LMDE

You are "trying to recover some files from a Katya install on usb" (pendrive?),
"plus the same install on SD card"
and want to know how to "find and mount other partitions on my hard disk".

What exactly do you want to do?

Re: Scribus 1.5 svn installation - freetype error

Two ideas, but I don't know whether they'll solve anything:
1. Add an S to your added line, it should read "FREETYPE_INCLUDE_DIRS".
2. Check whether scribus 1.5 needs a newer version of freetype than the one that comes with LMDE.
