Re: AMD on Primary, Intel on Secondary - No Secondary?

Has your integrated card worked within any other configuration while your discrete card has been installed? Windows, other versions of Mint or Linux, etc? Usually when you install a discrete graphics solution, your integrated graphics are disabled. In some BIOS, it is possible to reenable the integr...

Re: just a quick question for mint 16 64 bit install

You don't want to use a command line, but that's I think the only way to get the next version. http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/62. It's far less typing than the giant run-on sentence you typed asking for a Staples "Easy" button to do it for you. In the pastebin link on the tutorial, rep...

Re: Mint 15 does not recognise other partitions

I read somewhere I must install Windows first because, in the words of the writer, "Windows thinks it owns the PC and thus overwrites the MBR". Alright, I installed my Windows 7 and because Windows' Partitioning system is awfully confusing, I also installed Acronis Disk Director to split my single ...

Re: Mint 15 to Mint 16 menu cruft

Have you attempted following the duplicate menu items to verify that they point to valid resources on your machine? You may use the menu editor tool. Right click the menu button, then click Configure... then click "Open the menu editor" in the window that opens. Should allow you to safely remove the...

Re: My Experience Installing Linux Mint 16

If you do not have a discrete graphics solution, then you subject yourself to lower quality performance with graphics. I have never seen an on board device function as well as a discrete card, with its own RAM and processing unit. Intel on-board graphics are particularly bad, and you run into lots o...

Re: Strange install to harddrive issue

I'm not sure if this will help, but who knows? Anyway, I have 2 250GB SATAs on SATA0 and SATA1. Both drives have the same part number (STSxxx...), so that added some confusion when attempting to get the install working, but that's beside the point. Anyway, my intent was to install Mint 15 Cinnamon t...

Re: update mint 15

Ah, my mistake, I didn't know it was a boot level error. I cannot boot my desktop with a USB stick, so I'm not sure where to go from here, unfortunately.

Re: update mint 15

if you can access a console - you could try issuing:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
to ensure you get all available updates. This will update the Linux kernel as well. Hopefully it'll fix that error.

Re: What is CAJA - desktop

It ends in January. However, Petra is still in a Release Candidate state, so I'd prefer recommending 15, and be sure to mention that in-place upgrades are very possible through Linux Mint. It's not like Windows where you need an entirely new disk to upgrade. Synaptic (APT) handles everything. Altern...

Yes, you may also get to it using the DVD.

Re: Linux Mint 15 boots to GRUB prompt on W7 dual install

When I'd have this happen, my Windows MBR somehow had gotten broken, so GRUB didn't know where LM was relative to Windows or something. I used Windows Recovery Console to issue

Code: Select all

bootrec /fixmbr
then I used a LM Live DVD to fix Grub.

Re: Making Mint 16 DVD from download

I burned my image in K3B from LM15 KDE. It could be something going catastrophically wrong with Win7s burning tool, so you might try burning from LM 15 as you have access to that.

Re: What is CAJA - desktop

The github thread (see the link in the thread I mentioned) suggests it won't at present. Does anyone have any idea as to when this is going to be fixed. It would be quite embarrassing to recommend this OS to a friend and then have to try to explain to them why these 10 windows keep popping up on th...

Re: Grub and Windows 8 problems

I really don't have any interest in running an automatic fix. I don't really use or like windows so it's not a problem to have to catch the bios boot order menu occasionally. I just want to know whats going on for my own curiosity and be able to fix it manually. I don't know much about this stuff b...

Re: Grub and Windows 8 problems

Any time I'd have this issue pop up, I'd toss the Windows DVD in, enter the repair utility, hit a command line, then issue: bootrec /fixmbr . This will generally ignore any Linux installs, but it ensures that GRUB in the next step will recognize that you have Windows chewing on a hard drive somewher...
