Re: Firefox survey 2014 pestering...

If you can't remove Stylish via firefox's add ons manager you should be able to uninstall the package via Synaptic or delete it directly from usr/lib/firefox-addons/extensions.

Re: What is the best way to separate data from OS?

Creating a location launcher on the desktop might work better for you rather than using links for one of the issues you mention. In Mate you can do this via a right click on the desktop and going through the options from there.

Re: File Permissions and Sharing

Thanks for that. In PCLinuxOS it's 500 rather than 1000 so I guess that's the answer. I'm trying out Antergos at the moment and that seems to be 1000 so might stick with that as a back up rolling distro rather than PCLinuxOS.

Re: Problem when unmounting external hard disk

Might be entirely wrong but I've got vague memories of making a similar problem go away by unchecking the "browse media when inserted" box under Edit>Preferences>Media in caja.

File Permissions and Sharing

On my internal hard drive I've got Mint 17 Mate, my old copy of Mint 16 Mate and a recently made data partition formatted in ext4. On an external hard drive I've got another copy of Mint 17 Mate I use for testing/back up, a copy of PCLinuxOS and an NTFS data partition. All 4 operating systems can re...

Re: What start up programs do I really need on Mint 17

On a related note, I've just worked out that removing languages you think you don't need in the control panel settings stops mintstick/usb image writer from working so it's definitely easy to break stuff you'd think is completely unrelated by changing default settings. All fun and mental exercise po...

Re: What start up programs do I really need on Mint 17

Natural thing for Windows refugees to want to do. Windows works much better without anything uneccessary running in the background. I don't think disabling things in linux has anything like the same benefits but for what it's worth the only start up applications I kept running with my system (Mate e...

Re: How to automount ntfs drives in Linux Mint 17 KDE?

The best foolproof way I found to automount a partition on boot up with no errors was to set it's mount point up during the installation procedure. No amount of post installation manual fstab editing or setting it up using the disks utility from the menu or other downloaded apps seemed to make it do...

Re: LM 17 MATE how to get scroll buttons back, please?

Anyhow, that's another niggle sorted. Only about half a dozen to go and Mint 17 will be as good as 15 was. Agree with that. 15 worked fine out of the box, 17 I've had to go searching the internet and editing config files to fix a few things. Edit: Actually that's not entirely fair... 17Mate does al...

Re: No wireless after suspend - ath9k

This is what fixed the same issue for me albeit with a different driver module: On resuming from suspend type the terminal commands sudo rmmod ath9k folllowed by sudo modprobe ath9k If that works you can make it restart automatically by creating a shell script in the /etc/pm/sleep.d folder. Open tha...

Re: LM 17 MATE how to get scroll buttons back, please?

Try editing the following lines in the /usr/share/themes/Mint-X/gtk-2.0/gtkrc file GtkScrollbar::has-backward-stepper = 1 (changed value from 0 to 1) GtkScrollbar::has-forward-stepper = 1 (changed value from 0 to 1) GtkRange::stepper-size = 11 (can't remember what the original value of that was... 0...

Re: EasyBCD

Yes. It's simple and safe to use. Whether it will help with what you're specifically trying to do is another matter. It does mean an extra step in the bootloading process because you still have to go to the grub menu after to get to any linux installation but it seemed like a good idea to keep the w...

Re: Cinnamon vs MATE vs KDE vs Xfce

(and now there are rumblings about dropping support for 7 by next year - 2015) See the links below. As I understand it ''mainstream support" ends in Jan 2015 but "extended support" carries on until Jan 2020. And "extended support" means security updates so all's good for an...

Re: Mint 17 - Swap File

Do you actually need a swap file? I followed the usual instructions and set one up when installing Mint 15 for the first time but realised it never got utilised so never bothered with one for Mint 16 or 17. Depends how much physical memory your PC has and how much of it your particular computing hab...

Re: Wifi Will Not reconnect after machine wakes (17)

This seems to be a fairly common problem with several suggested fixes dotted around corners of the internet. The one that worked for me was to first find out the name of your wifi driver using the terminal command inxi -n (rt73usb in my case) Then on resuming from suspend type the terminal commands ...

Re: how to get up and down arrows on scroll bars?

Likewise, no idea why someone thought it was a good idea to remove them between Mint 16 and Mint 17. The easy way is to use a different theme to the default Mint-X one. Some still use scroll arrows. The slightly harder way which works in Mate at least is to edit the /usr/share/themes/Mint-X/gtk-2.0/...

Re: run application as root

I hesitate to answer questions on these forums because I'm far from an expert but sometimes it's painful watching people who probably do know a good answer being unhelpful. I think whatever the command is to start the application you run it as root by putting gksu infront of it. You can do this as a...

I'm not sure if hal and hal-info is the same thing but even after installing it and changing Chrome's Pepper Flash file to Adobe's, I cannot view protected content. No it's not the same thing. They took Hal out of the repositories. You can add a ppa to get it. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mjblenner/...

Re: Wired network fails after suspend

My similar problem is with the wifi network. The fix kindly supplied above, ie adding the line SUSPEND_MODULES="$SUSPEND_MODULES r8169 rt73usb " to the /etc/pm/config.d/unload_modules file only half worked for me. The network manager wakes back up now and tries to connect to the correct wi...
