Re: user with root privileges SOLUTION

copied the tarball to another director. extracted the executable in that other directory. copied it back to the Download folder in which I obtained the latest tarball...in my attempt to fix this multi-hour problem....and then double clicked the extracted file again...previous attempts to do that got...

Re: user with root privileges

respectfully, i read what you sent and think you may not be getting all I am trying to communicate. the net is that this is a new install of the exact same mint distro and I am not able to accomplish the same things. in this instance, I have extracted what is supposed to be the install file from the...

Re: user with root privileges

more info: extracting file from tarball produces a file which mint says is "unknown".....although this was downloaded from the heavily used truecrypt site. so I guess it simply opens getedit as it does not know what else to do. no "run" command shows up when double clicking the extracted file...and ...

Re: user with root privileges

now cannot install in root either.

when double clicking the extracted file for truecrypt, I believe that I am supposed to get a run command.

instead I get a 'get edit" error message.

how, please, do I get the run command I should and not 'getedit"?

thanks.

Re: user with root privileges

PS attempting to open software manager (how, now that I have thought about it, I installed truecrypt as a root user) as a non-root user prompts for non-root password...I give it...no error....but the manager does not open. when I attempt to open it as "root" (menu selection) same thing happens...I c...

Re: user with root privileges

thank ou both for recent answers. to address: I am not trying to enable a non-root user to invoke programs without a password. i am only trying to install programs...in this case, "Truecrypt"...which while downloadable as a tarball is, in fact, simply one file...or it shows up as one.......in the no...

Re: user with root privileges

i guess what is confusing me is that it installed easily when i was the root user...although i don't exactly recall what i did. i will look into what you suggest...and really appreciate your guidance. btw, is there an easy way for a root user to tell mint to allow certain programs to automatically b...

Re: user with root privileges

Re: running win 7 programs in mint 15

thanks all.

I have paperport running in VM ware.....and believe that I may be able to do that with dragon, as well.

acrobat I am not so sure....but I am willing to live with a VM to get "off of windows".....and so far, think that will do it.

I will keep you posted.

Re: running win 7 programs in mint 15

vm ware is where i have come down too.

i really need both these apps.......and my joy in finally getting off of windows won't be complete...or even achievable....until i can deal with these two programs.

thanks all for all.

Re: running win 7 programs in mint 15

thanks all so far.

if any of you have used, say, VMWare in mint (or any other distros) to effect usage of win 7 programs, I would be grateful to hear about it......

Re: install but no retention of data

it should tell you something that I now know what a GRUB menu from mint, looks like<g> it worked! two final questions, if I may: 1. I used unetbootin to create the USB drive. it asked for, for ubuntu and its derivatives, some selectable space for files across rebooting...whatever that means. it gave...
