Re: OS update problems

Thanks for taking the time to explain this in detail in noob-lingo, that's very kind. If one has to actively check for updates (in the manner you described) I wonder why there couldn't be an optional email subscription service that would automatically send a short notification when an update is rele...

Re: OS update problems

"The icon is changing when upgrades are available. The shield has some blue circle inside. For me it's a notification. It's not a popup of course, but it's... better." Thanks for that. It's the same "!" in a blue circle that appeared right after OS installation and a green "...

Re: OS update problems

Removed old versions in grub. Any other newbie reading this, here is how to: - open synaptic package manager (it's a pre-installed application) - type the kernel version that you want to remove in the Quick search text field, e.g. 3.2.0 - for each of the entries associated with the old kernel (e.g. ...

Re: OS update problems

"You can remove it if the new kernel works normally and you don't want the old one in your system."
How ?
"I don't think that option does anything in Debian."
So I will get notified when an update is available ?

Re: OS installation problems

Hi, thanks for your quick reply. Is this the first time you updated the kernel in a Debian or Ubuntu system? :) Yup. New to Linux. That obvious, is it ? (Hey, this is the Newbie-forum after all) :D So: do I do anything about it ? "etc->apt->sources.list->updates" That is where I found the ...

OS update problems

Hi, I installed LMDE 64-bit and adjusted my desktop (Mate) settings. I then went online to update LMDE and after rebooting the computer, all my prior settings are gone. My questions are 1. can I get my settings back or do I have to adjust everything again ? 2. is this going to happen every single ti...

Re: Small but annoying PRINTER problem

Oh, fabulous . Now that's embarassing  Sorry !!! Why I have claimed that I am running LMDE ? Because I thought I was. And why did I think that ? Because the installation CD that I used claims that that's what's on it. Well, I guess I'll start over again. I'll download the OS myself this...

Re: Small but annoying PRINTER problem

Hi, my CUPS version is 1.6.2. My system-config printer is 1.3.12. Should I update the latter ? If yes: how exactly ? What does work is when I print to file, save the file (as pdf), open the pdf and open the print menu. At this point I CAN chose the "current page". But obviously I then have...

Re: Small but annoying PRINTER problem

Hi, thanks so much for your reply.
Unfortunately, the "print to file" option does not offer "current page" either (neither as pdf nor as postscript) :(

Small but annoying PRINTER problem

LMDE 64-bit, Mate + Brother HL-2030 Hi, I managed to install my printer, but when trying to print a page, I am unable to select the "print current page" option. I can only print either the whole document or specific pages. The "current page" option is dimmed and cannot be chose (...

Re: tracking cookies and cross-platform (browser) malware

@nomko: which is exactly why I asked about cross-platform issues (see header) My first two sentences in this thread were: "Hi, I'd like to know how to go about spyware / malware such as tracking cookies, cross-platform malware (Flash etc) and browser vulnerabilities in Linux, please ? (Yes, I h...

Re: Add-on For Firefox

Hi, I just wanted to say "thank you" for this. I looked into these sort of add-ons years ago, but was unable to find any that worked and eventually just gave up. Well...times have changed :-) and although I did not favor the one you suggested, the comments steered me towards two applicatio...

Re: tracking cookies and cross-platform (browser) malware

As I said: "I really do not want to get into a privacy debate here." I asked a simple question with regards to scanners that can detect malware/spyware/tracking cookies. Every Windows user has at least one of them (or one / more of their counterparts). A privacy discussion misses the point.

Linuxviolin, I LOVE your tweaks !! Thanks a lot for those. I just thought I'd add that the "blink" feature was removed in FF23 (thankfully) :-)

Re: tracking cookies and cross-platform (browser) malware

@eanfrid: thank you. I used to run BetterPrivacy but went on to change my macromedia-settings instead. Request Policy sounds interesting though I think that I might already be covered by Ghostery and Disconnect in that regard (not sure though, will read up). The Adblock list looks great, except that...

Re: tracking cookies and cross-platform (browser) malware

Reorx, I know that you are trying to help and I very much DO appreciate it, but I think I am having problems explaining the issue. And I really do not want to get into a privacy debate here. The fact that I have to explain myself is kinda self-explanatory (the "lack of concern" I mentioned...
