Re: PC-BSD 10 opinions

/dev/urandom is right, not many developers are working on GhostBSD right now. It is more or less user-friendly though, so for new users it could still be a good choice. However, if you want to use BSD-es without any practical reason - just to learn more about them, then I think it's better to instal...

Re: edX free tutorial - Introduction to Linux

Thanks, Koninator. :D I was going to start a thread about it, but you've already done that. :D This course is from the Linux Foundation. It's self-paced. 3 major distro families are covered: 1) Fedora, RHEL, CentOS; 2) SLES, openSUSE; 3) Debian, Ubuntu, Mint. You can use any of the above distros to ...

Re: Final thoughts about Linux Mint

Thanks for your ideas. :) However: 1) Some programs aren't available for GNU/Linux yet, so they can't be in the software repository either. Besides, I'd rather see free and open source software in the repo, than proprietary ones. 2) I think cloud services aren't really for community projects like Mi...

Re:

Debian GNU/KFreeBSD still exists (so do Arch BSD and Gentoo something-BSD), but why would you want that? There is no real reason to do that. I just wanted to say that jumping straight in the sea of pure BSD-es isn't necessary if someone wants to try only the Free-BSD kernel (if one thinks it's more...

Re: PC-BSD 10 opinions

The standart requirments for PC-BSD are very high This is the reason why I didn't like it either. Recommended requirements are: 64 bit CPU, 4 GB RAM, Nvidia or ATI grahics cards (!), 50 GB free space on hard drive. I almost thought I was reading system requirements of some modern computer game. You...

Re: Anti-Virus in Linux? Erring On The Safe Side

I agree with var and killer de bug. Open source is more secure, not because it cannot have any vulnerabilities, but because these vulnerabilities usually get noticed and fixed ASAP. On the other hand, a closed source program might have an unpatched vulnerability for years. And at least, you can be s...

Re: [Chat] Still keep a Windows? Speak out your reason

At work I use dual booting. I spend most of my time in GNU/Linux, but if I need a printer (this happens rarely) or if using ms office is absolutely required, I switch to windows and then get back to GNU/Linux ASAP. At home - I have only GNU/Linux. In fact, I've never tried to dual boot on ...

Re: Anti-Virus in Linux? Erring On The Safe Side

Well, no offence mate, but you advertised bitdefender and posted how to install it. Why would I install it if it's not going to work for me? Thanks for your advice, but I'm still not convinced. Besides, if you visit bitdefender's new website, I doubt you'll find any Unix related product for home use...

Re: Getting brightness level to stay after reboot?

I don't know if this trick works for Ubuntu, but this is what I did in Mint: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=208&t=151502#p800378 First I installed xbacklight and then added it as a startup program as roblm suggested. Before that, I used to control the brightness with a script, but it di...

I don't have a choice, I have to accept.
And this makes it POSIX compliant - command vi works in terminal.

Re: Upset that emacs is missing from live dvd

This said, vi(m) is installed by default in LMDE. I don't know for sure for the main edition of Linux Mint. Now, this is the moment when I think my memory has stopped working correctly. If what you wrote is true and I believe it is, then I'm totally wrong and vi is installed in Mint. :o But...

Emacs has 47... I wouldn't use Atom, it sends usage data to Google Analytics. If I had to work on windows, I'd still use gedit or Emacs, or maybe notepad++. vi isn't preinstalled, that's what I wanted to...

Re: Some characters not showing up in konsole

I tried Belgian layout and I found out that when I press keys without Shift, I get: &é"'(§è! And if I press Shift + these keys, then what I see on the screen are: 12345678 On the layout preview numbers are below other characters, so it shouldn't be working like that, IMHO. In English layout (and pro...

If Netrunner had not switched to muon instead of synaptic I'd give it another serious try. Everytime I would try to install synaptic it would default to muon which is worthless and troublesome.... Well, Netrunner 14 comes with both Muon and Synaptic package managers preinstalled. So, you might want...
