Re: Upset that emacs is missing from live dvd

LM doesn't come with vi either. I haven't tried LM17 yet, but 15 and 16 came with gedit (and nano), which is easier to use than either emacs or vi. For an experienced developer it's easy to uninstall or install any software. ...but it does have an MP4 player and Firefox. Emacs is absolutely c...

Re: Windows Nein (aka Windows 9)

Right now, these are rumors only. But in the end, M$ users will have no choice left, I guess - one day you won't be able to install "bloatware", maybe in windows 10 or 11. Users won't have windows, windows will have them.

Re: Computer related jokes

I found this on serverfault.com (I underlined the important parts): I am using Ubuntu 10.10. I am generally good with computers but mostly with Windows, I'm not very familiar with Ubuntu. I'm trying to setup a website and I'm talking with a friend I have who works for a school IT department who is g...

I voted for 17, but I'd also add that if you like Ubuntu based distros and KDE, you should try Netrunner too.

Can you imagine this thread on a windows forum?
You'd see 10-20 identical desktops. If I'm not mistaken, some windows editions don't even let you change the wallpaper.

This post http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2181558&p=13063772#post13063772 in particular. It is a good sign when the devs feel this way about the product, that it should work without setting up a bunch of parameters Yes, I absolutely agree with you. I have huge respect for all these develop...

Re: FaceBook password faileur - in Lnx/Mint_17 cinnamon.

I found this on facebook itself: https://www.facebook.com/help/www/219529168076609 But most probably you've already checked caps lock and input languages/layouts. If it was a problem with web-browsers, for example if you were blocking cookies, you'd see another message and not "password incorrect" o...

4 things I want to add to this thread: 1) Please, mark the thread as solved; 2) Here is another thread about this bug: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2181558 3) I've tried it myself and "wapf = 1 " worked for me: echo "options asus_nb_wmi wapf=1" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/asus_nb_wmi.conf...

Re: FaceBook password faileur - in Lnx/Mint_17 cinnamon.

It doesn't sound like a Mint problem to me. If FB tells you that the password is not correct, chances are, for some reason it isn't. Or it might be a problem with FB itself. It happens sometimes.
If you can, try to log in from another computer and see what happens.

Re: 2014-The year of the Linux desktop?

We go the the stores in the US and everything has Windows on it, is it any wonder people are not trying Linux? In my country, computers are sold with FreeDOS installed. Good news. If HP starts selling computers with GNU/Linux + Lenovo is a chinese corporation, so maybe they'll do the same too...

Re: Mint Vs Puppy Linux?

Puppy Linux runs from RAM. It doesn't even need to be installed on the HDD. You can install it on a 4GB USB flash drive, for example. When you boot your PC with Puppy, it loads into the RAM and when you want to shut down the PC, you have the option to save your session on that USB. So, normally, unl...

Re: A plea about passwords

I fall into the grandparent age group and look at the age thing as a red herring. If a user of any age can't deal with their own passwords then they need real help beyond installing the an OS. To me the age thing falls into the "Linux will never grow unless..." and "not for normal people lines", li...
