Re: So I tried to install Windows OS today and...

Yes, my first post in this thread was heavily opinionated. I agree that both OS's have strengths and weaknesses, It's just that Windows weaknesses are just a bit too much for me to handle sometimes. I'm not trying to force any belief/value/whatever on anyone, I just ranted a bit and sorry if I have ...

Re: So I tried to install Windows OS today and...

Well, that *could* work, the only thing is finding one that's compatible. My usb wifi adapter is rather old. I might find some Linux-friendly games for my brother to play and enjoy. Or anything browser based. Linux is hassle free 98% of the time, the other 2% is often problems that are simple and lo...

So I tried to install Windows OS today and...

...Every single reason I dislike the OS came flooding back to me. My reason for wanting to install a Windows OS is so that my brother could play some of his windows-only games that didn’t work well in WINE. Truth be told, it was a failure. Windows installed okay, then I tried to plug in my USB Wifi ...

Re: Downloading Dota 2 on Steam

Hm, that is odd. A couple of things: -You may want to download the steam client directly from the steam website, http://store.steampowered.com/. This is how I did it, and I have no issues. -You may want to check for updates to steam itself. -You may want to verify the integrity of Dota 2's cache via...

Here's "99 Bottles of Beer on The Wall" programmer version: 99 bugs in the programmers code, 99 bugs in his code! He squashes one now, tosses the code around and ends up with 127 bugs in his code! How do you kill a programmer? Easy. Give him a bottle of shampoo that has the following directions: Wet...

Re: Is a "How to use google" guide/thread a good idea?

Killer de bug, that's basically what I was going for. It might be a good idea to see if there is a way to get better Linux-based results. There is the Linux Beginner Search Engine project, but I'm not sure how many people use that. Right now its looking like there is little interest in this guide. I...

Ah. So then, shady business practices? Is that what you (English Invader) were going for? Something along the lines of that, without companies, we would not have advanced? I'm not quite following you, that’s all.

Mate, they've told you what to do. ... Take your number in Megabytes, divide by 0.125, and get the Megabits equivalent. So a 20MB/s connection would be 160Mbps. Simple, elegant, and efficient. :) ,if somendoy give mee the code i glad I don't think they will, because then you wouldn't learn anything...

Re: Fed up with Mint

Almost all of my installs have been USB. The only problem is that I only have one USB jump drive, at which point I started burning to discs (2 OS's so far). I have never had any issues, even with way, way, WAY old hardware (pentium 4, likely less in my one PC, with <= (less than or equal to) 2GB of ...

Re: Linux Mint Mate vs. Ubuntu Mate

I feel that English Invader was referring to the generalized idea of technological advances due to hackers (please correct me, English Invader, if I am wrong). For example, if we did not have hackers pushing the limits of technology (and some times legality), we would not have made much technologica...

Re: Is a "How to use google" guide/thread a good idea?

@MartyMint I feel that Google can both be used as a search engine as well as a verb. Same thing as the program Photoshop. Take for instance, "This image was clearly photoshop'ed". I mean't more of the verb meaning in the topic title/poll question. That said, possible suggestions will apply to most (...

Is a "How to use google" guide/thread a good idea? [CLOSED]

So lately, I've been wondering if a guide to better google searches would be a good idea for this forum. There are a LOT of tricks that many people do not know. Things like using short, descriptive terms to get better results. As an example, searching for "how to make a large punch drink quickly" ma...

Re: Linux Mint Mate vs. Ubuntu Mate

Perhaps its just me, but I feel that Linux Mint is Ubuntu done right. As such, my vote lies with Mint. But really, for the most part you are comparing, at least software wise, fairly close to the same thing. It would be like comparing a red apple (Ubuntu) to a green apple (Mint). At the end of the d...

Re: Screen unlocked after resuming suspension with button

Ah, the screen locker (screen saver?) is different from suspend or sleep. For instance (again in XFCE), I have settings > screensaver and settings > power manager, both of which mention sleep/suspend/hibernate.

I'm not sure what cinnamon setting you would want exactly, though screensaver won't be it.

Re: Screen unlocked after resuming suspension with button

In XFCE, I use settings > session and startup > advanced > lock screen before sleep. That may or may not work for suspend, but worth a try. Cinnamon should have some similar settings. You could also try the power manager if session and startup is not helpful.
