Re: Black screen after GRUB

This sounds more likely to be a UEFI issue than a graphics issue. I don't fully understand UEFI myself but you might do a search on how to do a boot repair.

Re: Unable to play music albums, only single files

Check out Banshee. I have found it to be the most intuitive and user friendly media library/player. By default you are able to select albums and play all the tracks without having to create a playlist.

Re: Mint won't boot

I had something like this happen and it was a corrupted sector on the boot HDD. Try booting via USB. If everything loads, back up your data, then reinstall your Linux partition.

Re: Solid HDD/SSD indicator light on Acer Aspire E1-150-2500

If you listen closely, do you hear any activity? Possibly the HDD is fine and it is just the LED that is faulty.

Also run a SMART test in disk utility. What does it say?

Re: Samba | Failed to mount Windows share: Permission denied

I had this problem recently. I believe I fixed it by opening file manager as root, then right-clicking on the folders in question and changing permission to read/write access for all users.

Re: Help: No Audio from anything.

I have had similar issues with both of my computers trying to get audio working through HDMI. The problem is many Linux distributions seem to set the default to analog-out in the pulse audio config file. See my post on this thread. You need to edit the file to the right combination of card # and sin...

Re: Mint 17 XFCE Installed from USB, Will Not Boot from HDD

I suspect a problem with UEFI. If you installed in the wrong mode (EFI or Legacy), you can end up with a no-boot issue even when it looks like you have successfully installed Linux. You either need to boot in the correct mode and reinstall, or do a boot repair: http://www.rodsbooks.com/linux-uefi/ I...

Re: Boot hangs with grey screen

Good! At least your data are safe. I would recommend using your USB stick to also test your HDD. It is possible that it is failing. In that case, you might as well switch out the HDD for a new one and then go ahead and reinstall (unless someone has a specific solution to your issue).

Re: Possibly fried graphics card?

It sounds like you get Linux to install successfully. Why not stop there and continue using Linux with the default drivers? Sounds like the proprietary drivers are what is screwing things up.

Re: Boot hangs with grey screen

Try booting with Linux on a USB stick. If it works, you can at least verify that your data are safe and rule out a hardware issue. Then the worst case scenario is you have to reinstall the OS.

Re: set wrong resolution on HDMI, now i get a black screen

Boot using the "nomodeset" command in GRUB. If you google "GRUB" and "nomodeset" there should be lots of tutorials to show you how to do this. Then reset the resolution and edit GRUB back to the default.

Best solution I have is the Airdroid app. Run the app on your phone, then you can transfer files to it using your web browser.

Re: Live USB not booting

I am guessing you are handling the EFI process correctly but it is a graphics issue. You might try booting with the command "nomodeset" in GRUB. Just Google around, it is easy to find instructions how to do that.

Re: Backup computer - Wireless

The offsite just depends on your personal preferences, how much data you have and how much you are willing to pay. Depending on your needs, you could easily get by with Dropbox or Box. There are plenty of ways to do a home backup. My setup is a wireless network using Samba on the server machine and ...

Re: Libre Office and Open Office

Have you also uninstalled the other Libre Office packages? There is also a "powerpoint" type of program (Impress) and the Math one that you would also need to get rid of if you want to get rid of Libre Office completely. You might also use Synaptic and do a search for "libre" and...

I have no idea what is going on for you, but as a next step I would try removing it and then reinstalling through the software manager or synaptic. You might also try deleting your chromium settings in the /.config folder.

Re: Customization in MATE: Is it the best?

Applets that are pre-installed or applets that you can download from the package manager? Which one have better support for that? They would moodtly be installed manually. Again my understanding is KDE has the most options (but it is also the most resource intensive). MATE is more on the level of X...

More special effects and applets, as far as I can tell.

Re: 2nd hdd not showing

Also type: sudo blkid This will give you a complete list of available drives with unique device IDs. These IDs are important because they never change (eg even if you switch cables around). I have found that Mint does not mount new HDDs by default, so you will need to take the information from blkid...
