Re: desktop pc components for office use

Do you mean recommendations for compatible builds? The forums at Toms Hardware are full of them:

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/

You can also choose your own using the tool at PCPartpicker:

Re: Upgrading an ancient PC to Linux Mint

You should note that "Mint" denotes the underlying Ubuntu kernel and a particular set of default programs (called packages). It is kind of like a brand rather than a specific operating system. That is, the Mint brand includes actually about a half dozen different "flavors", each ...

Re: Extremely High CPU Temperature

Try running another distribution in live mode using a USB stick and tell us whether it is "kinda" or "exactly" the same problem. Then it will be easier to tell if it is a hardware issue. That temp is definitely high, and LXDE should be a nice lightweight distribution, easy for th...

Re: setting up static ip for wireless

The easiest way to edit your network settings is by clicking on the network icon in the task bar to bring up your network settings. If eth0 isn't there it could be because you are connected via Wifi. Either way, you can use the network settings GUI to set a static IP. Here is a tutorial (it may look...

Re: Mint 13 cinnamon freezes sometime..What to do?

I have had a similar issue in Cinnamon 16 and Xubuntu 13.10. What has worked for me so far has been to upgrade to the experimental oibaf PPA drivers: https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/graphics-drivers

(I am also using Intel Sandy Bridge hardware).

Re: Another "no sound" problem .. Mint 16

It looks like pulseaudio is not loading your soundcard. Try changing the set-card-profile value in the config file to 0. So we are trying: set-card-profile 1 output:analog-stereo set-default-sink 1 Does that help? If sound is not working automatically when you reboot, go back into System Settings-->...

Re: Cinnamon just crashed. you are running in fallback mode

that is not so good news. I just downloaded the 3.14 version because it was said to be the last version, never crossed my mind that the system wasn't tested to this. I understand this error is caused by a video driver error or is it possible that it is caused by something else? Is there anyway to g...

Re: Growing the use of LInux Mint in the future

As long as people are running Windows programs, they are going to run Windows. Having to run Wine will always make Linux seem that much more complicated. The answer is to have alternatives available in Linux that are just as good or better than the Windows versions, and I think Linux is already doin...

In System Settings-->Sound, what tabs do you see? Is there a tab for "hardware"?

Did you try the /etc/pulse/default.pa fix?

Re: Another "no sound" problem .. Mint 16

From your pacmd list it looks like 1 is analog-stero. If you want HDMI I think you will need want the following: set-card-profile 0 output:hdmi-stereo set-default-sink 0 If you want output through the analog jack it would be: set-card-profile 1 output:analog-stereo set-default-sink 1 Also when the c...

Re: Another "no sound" problem .. Mint 16

In terminal type: pacmd list-sinks This will give you the sound cards and output options (sinks) available to pulseaudio. Find the number corresponding to the output you want. Then open the pulseaudio config file: /etc/pulse/default.pa Let's say there is one soundcard listed as index 0, and analog-s...

Re: How do I switch to a different desktop environment?

Look in your software manager for available desktops. Install the ones you want. Then the next time you log in you will have the option of choosing a different desktop. One word of warning, however, is that it is harder to uninstall (they will install all of their sub-components and dependencies), s...

Re: WHAT TO DO NOW???????????

Mint 13 will be supported through 2017 so there is nothing wrong with what you have now. The next LTS version will be 17, to be released in April 2014; after that the next LTS version will be 21, which would be due in about 2016. If you absolutely dislike upgrades, your plan should be to stick with ...

Re: No HDMI sound using my Gigabyte Z87N-wifi MB & Mint

Pulseaudio is basically the sound system in Mint and Ubuntu. It selects which soundcard to use, and which output on the soundcard. Right now it is most likely set to the analog audio output and needs to be switched to HDMI. When you click on the volume icon you can access the pulseaudio sound settin...

Re: No HDMI sound using my Gigabyte Z87N-wifi MB & Mint

Your pulseaudio is probably set to the analog profile and you need to switch it to hdmi. Try the method here using pacmd under "changing default sink from command line" and choose the hdmi option. http://askubuntu.com/questions/71863/how-to-change-pulseaudio-sink-with-pacmd-set-default-sin...

Re: Global Linux: The big Linux project

Just use Ubuntu or Mint. No distribution is ever going to be authoritative. That is what is so great about Linux. If you just want one authoritative distribution with rock solid dependability, it is called MacOS.
